Pneumonia is an illness of the lungs and respiratory system in which the alveoli (microscopic air-filled sacs of the lung) become inflamed and flooded with fluid. The treatment for pneumonia is regulated on the base of its causative agents. In case of a bacterial pneumonia, antibiotic treatments are prescribed. Consists of first line for Streptococcal pneumonia and second generation Cephalosporin with or without Macrolides such as Azithromycin or erythromycin.
Along with the medicinal treatment, patients are also given intravenous fluids, chest physiotherapy, analgesia, oxygen supplements, respiratory therapy and other supportive measures which are needed.
American Lung Association has recommended few guidelines: • Take plenty of rest
• Take plenty of fluids
• Maintain a healthy and good diet
• Avoid smoking
• In case of fever over the counter aspirin of NSAIDs can be administered
• Mechanical ventilation
• Avoid cold suppressants
