Physical & Emotional Abuse Support Group
Abuse is a general term for the treatment of someone that causes some kind of harm (to the abused person, to the abusers themselves, or to someone else) that is unlawful or wrongful. No one deserves abuse, period. Abuse can be emotional, physical, or sexual.
This is an odd behaviour that I've noticed too. The first idea that comes to my mind is that he doesn't use their names because they are not pets or companions to him, but just 'things'.
As for the 'YOUR mates', etc. I would make a stab in the dark guess that, since he is a narcissist, he probably doesn't like himself very much. By making everyone out to be only your friends, he both distances himself from them and your granddaughter, and expresses his own isolation and self-loathing.
I could be wrong, but this is my take on it. Hope it helps, and you're keeping well! XX

R.B. is pretty much on the money
in regards to both objectifying and
distancing.
In the world of a narcissist, there
are no other people. The entities
that he's forced to share his world
with may be there, but he's not going
to dignify their actual existence.
It's actually not a strange tactic
at all. It's textbook narcissistic
abuse.
Sending you wishes for feeling
better quickly.
Take good care.
It is pretty creepy, but I agree with the others on what it's about.
This is the really weird part for me. I also have a very hard time using people's names. People at work or in my social life, not so much. My kids not. I do use a lot of pet names, but I use their names, too, regularly, without thinking twice. But. Intimate relationships are different for me. I could never call my husband by his name. I actually would panic if he went far from me and I would have to call him, because I did not want to have to say his name out loud and I was aware of it. Nor his parents' names. Nor my own mother. And the one guy I have been in love with since my separation--same thing. I would force myself to say his name and I felt *afraid*, really afraid and panicky. Is that strange? Why is that? I don't think I'm a narcissist...
