Richard Shenkman said he was expecting a reaction when he asserted Wednesday, during his sentencing for the 2009 kidnapping of his ex-wife, that he has hired an assassin to kill Nancy Tyler.
The 62-year-old former public relations executive told the court the state Department of Correction would likely come down hard on him and wondered aloud whether Judge Julia D. Dewey would even allow him to continue addressing the court.
But the judge, who listened impassively while Shenkman exercised his "right of allocution," barely acknowledged Shenkman's on-the-record rant when she handed down a 70-year sentence for kidnapping, arson, illegal gun possession and other crimes.
And Tyler, who had addressed the court before Shenkman delivered his 10-minute speech, did not comment when reporters asked her later about her ex-husband's remarks. She said only that she and her family had "moved on."
As of late Thursday, there was no response from prosecutor Vicki Melchiorre, who was asked whether the state would investigate Shenkman's claims or prosecute him for threatening Tyler in court. Other court observers predicted the state would not pursue new charges against Shenkman, since he is already serving what will amount to a life sentence and appears to crave the spotlight.
Shenkman was found guilty in October of kidnapping Tyler at gunpoint in downtown Hartford, holding her hostage at his South Windsor home and burning down the dwelling after she escaped. At his sentencing in Hartford Superior Court, Shenkman told the judge he had hired an assassin to fatally shoot his wife and would be proud to be charged with capital felony after her death.
Shenkman, who has been housed at the MacDougall-Walker Correctional Institution in Suffield, said the "assassin" he hired was not someone he met in prison. But he did make comments about receiving offers to kill Tyler from fellow prisoners.
It is unclear whether his remarks could land him in segregation or result in closer monitoring of his mail and phone calls. A Department of Correction spokesman said department policy precludes him from discussing the conditions of confinement of individual inmates.
"Any sanctions for his comments would be something that the court or law enforcement would have to react to," spokesman Brian Garnett said. "In terms of what we would do safety- and security-wise, that's not something I would be able to go into. Obviously, we are cognizant of what he said and what he threatened, so we would take appropriate steps to monitor the situation."

I remember the day that happened, as I'm sure you do. This is what we mean, every time we say an abuser doesn't change. They CAN'T learn, they can't feel remorse, or empathy. He had her handcuffed in the basement and intended to set the house on fire with her in it. And he thinks that's ok.
Abusers get worse. They live in alternate reality. The fact that he will live out his life in prison, that he has been told, NO, YOU CANNOT DO THIS, doesn't matter. He still wants her dead....because she chose freedom over abuse. He already burned down their house at the shore the day before he was supposed to give it to her.
Sociopathic. Narcissitic. All the disorders all in one person. But the thing to remember is, that these people,whatever the label, are dangerous. EXTREMELY DANGEROUS.
