Physical & Emotional Abuse Support Group
Abuse is a general term for the treatment of someone that causes some kind of harm (to the abused person, to the abusers themselves, or to someone else) that is unlawful or wrongful. No one deserves abuse, period. Abuse can be emotional, physical, or sexual.

Honestly, can you guys let me know what you think of this letter I am giving to my employer (for those who didn't read the long-winded post, I am having difficulty with a coworker/actually staff member. I just want to make sure this is clear, concise, and leaves no doubt that I am serious about the threat. I am, admittedly, also trying to cover my own butt if s*** hits the fan and/or I quit. PLEASE give your honest opinion. I have never done this before and actually feel a little silly doing it, but I have been reading up on the warning signs of workplace violence since someone brought it up and I actually am getting pretty scared. My H of course is thinking I should be more worried about a potential lawsuit from this woman, but I KNOW I didn't do anything wrong! That is what is most frustrating. Anyway, here is the letter, please let me know what you think!
In light of recent activities in the office, I am very concerned for my safety and for the safety of the employees in the Upper Marlboro office of Weinstein Eye Associates. Sherry Clarks erratic and hostile behavior when an issue is brought to light in which I need to speak to her, such as regarding errors she has made, makes me nervous interacting with her. Each time in the past that an issue has been discussed with her, regardless of the nature of the discussion, Sherrys histrionics and threats make rational discussion impossible. I have had multiple discussions with other employees in which they have clearly registered concern over her comments regarding purchasing a gun and learning to protect herself from threats, coupled with her erratic and often overly emotional behavior toward management and other employees.
I have tried to speak with Sherry gently regarding some of the concerns I and others have regarding her escalating mistakes and increasingly odd behaviors, to no avail. In desperation I requested that my practice administrator step in and assist me with trying to uncover the root of the problems so that we can remedy them and move on productively. Unfortunately, that meeting deteriorated quickly into threatening and accusatory behavior on the part of Sherry Clark and the final result was that Sherry was offered the opportunity to go home by Dr. Weinstein in light of her emotional disturbance, which was causing discomfort with the other employees and the patients. Naively, I assumed that all would return to normal following this display and perhaps with a gentle conversation that evening, as she typically contacts me when these episodes occur and I am able to coax her into acknowledging that her perceptions are in fact distorted and that nobody is out to get her or targeting her as she believes.
I am concerned because Sherry Clarks erratic behavior appears to be escalating. I have been receiving messages from Sherry implying that she feels that Tammy was abusing her and that I set her up to be abused. I fear that Sherry, in her emotional state, is dangerous in light of statements she has made repeatedly to myself and others in the office, on multiple occasions, regarding the fact that she now has a gun, is trained to use it, and will go to great lengths to protect herself. I feel that this, coupled with her current emotional state, could represent a potentially dangerous situation for myself, Tammy, and indeed for the entire staff of the Upper Marlboro office.
I am in fact uncomfortable with the fact that Sherry Clark is being permitted to return to work following this obvious display of emotional instability and threatening behavior toward myself and Tammy. I have had multiple conversations, as well, with other employees in the Upper Marlboro office who are also concerned about her behavior and have expressed a desire not to work with her again. They are, in fact, discussing the locations of the panic buttons and how quickly police will respond to the office should the unthinkable happen and Sherry appear at the office with the intent to shoot someone. I have to concur with them that I am uncomfortable working with her again in light of her behavior, and that I am also in fear for my life and theirs as this situation has been all too common in recent timesschool and office shootings. I have not been sleeping well and this situation has caused me tremendous distress.

Is there anyway you can get a bunch of other people to sign it too?
I think owners need to really understand you all stand firmly together.
I sure hope you can get something resolved. Too bad someone couldn't get the gun away from her.
Does she have any relatives that see the crazy side of her???
((((((((((((((((((((((HUGS))))))))))))))))))
No matter what occurs, though, I am not sure I am staying with the company. The more I think of it, the more I realize that the owners only blow smoke about management being backed no matter what they do, in reality they are not going to back anyone--only hope it goes away. And you are right, they should be a little more concerned than they are. Irregardless, most workplace shootings happen after the employee is fired, so will we ever be or even feel safe in the office at this point? Thanks for your support and help!
Anyway, she kept repeating that she and her husband have contacted their attorney to see what resolution can happen at this point. She also stated that she wanted each of us to be assured that our safety is their top priority and there is no guarantee that this employee will be returning to the company. I appreciate the fact that they are taking it seriously, but I am still not sure how I feel about this whole situation.
First, I am feeling really bad for this woman. God help me, this is the same thing that happens when I finally get up the courage to stand up to the bully in my house. I start to think that it isn't really their fault they act that way and there may be something more I should have done to help them feel more secure so they wouldn't have to act like that. Ugghh..I know it even sounds ridiculous when I sit and read it!
Also, I find myself wondering why this had to go to this level for the owners to seriously think about this woman's future with the company. This isn't the first time situations like this have arisen with this exact same employee and MULTIPLE other people in the company. Each time she is treated like a delicate china doll and allowed to "win" the battle for authority (at least this is the way it seems). I can't imagine behaving as she has repeatedly and still having a job to go to each day! Just a vent. Again.
Thanks everyone!!
