Remembering Martin Luther King

Back in school (when I was in school,
Martin Luther King was a living leader),
we were taught about Reverand King
being a follower of Mohandas Karamchand
Gandhi, because of his position of civil
disobedience to governments doing wrong
to citizens.

Gandhi had been killed for his beliefs.
And then we lost Robert Kennedy. And
then we lost King.

I grew up in a democacy that was in a
war I didn't understand. And the leaders
I thought were worthy of my respect
were being killed.

I won't pretend that I was politically active.
I was absorbed with musical theater and
didn't really understand the sociocultural
zeitgeist of my generation and our times.

Older now, and hopefully a bunch wiser, I
do understand now. I came to understand
the caliber of men who were being assasinated,
through the tumultuous times of my youth. I
know now, who we lost.

I mourn the lost Kennedys and the cut-short life
of Martin Luther King. Great character doesn't
come around in great numbers. And the life of
these people are often vulnerable to those who
want to silence their message of peace and
equality.

We are bereft, from their loss.

Let us celebrate all who encourage us to move
towards compassion and connectedness.

Remember to wage peace and
spread love. . . . today and every day.

I remember the day JFK died and the world was sad for the loss of a leader. But I wasn't that sad over his death. Instead I was sad a few years later over the death of a hard working charismatic leader no one knew the name of....Martin Luther King.

Some how at my young age of ten years, I knew life for AfricanAmericans and all other people would be many struggles. I was a part of those struggles.
As a white person, I believe we are all equal and celebrate the civil liberties that Rev Dr King did with solidarity.

I always think of this day bittersweet.

RIP Rev Dr King.

I think of Martin Luther King as a freedom fighter who really made a difference for African Americans in this country because of his talented ways of reaching out peacefully to the government and the people and feel like he made it possible to change many laws of oppression in this country and I think he is probably a Saint in Heaven for helping so many people peacefully and dying like a martyr for his people! i respect all he did and Thank God for the changes he made even after his death he made change possible!

I had been active in the civil rights movement and was a jr in college when MLK died. Two days later there was a more or less spontaneous gathering in the central plaza. There were at least 200 people there, standing shoulder to shoulder. The word spread through the grapevine, and people just showed up. We didn't really speak to each other; just stood in silence as they broadcast his speeches and played gospel music. It was one of the most amazing feelings of unity that I have ever experienced.
