Abuse is a general term for the treatment of someone that causes some kind of harm (to the abused person, to the abusers themselves, or to someone else) that is unlawful or wrongful. No one deserves abuse, period. Abuse can be emotional, physical, or sexual.

I was a senior in high school and about to graduate and go forth into the world. I was amazingly apolitical, wrapped up as I was, in my artistic expression. But I was startled when I heard on the TV news that college students had been killed on a college campus, at an anti-war protest.
Forty years ago today, four young-adults were killed on the grounds of their school in the United States of America, as they walked, unarmed, raising their voices for non-violence. Four dead in O HI O.
I can't know now, what my parents thought about what transpired, if they were frightened that somebody's children had gone off to college to get higher education, and would never be returning home again. My parents are gone now, so I can't ask them what they remember and what they were thinking.
Frankly, I'm embarrassed that I wasn't thinking much about the news I heard on the TV. I remember where I was sitting when I heard it, though. Ironically, I was sitting at my dressing table, looking into the mirror and applying blush to my cheekbones. I blush now to recall how oblivious I was at the time, at that age, when others were marching and dying.
The best I can say, is that I'm no longer oblivious. I don't apply blush anymore. I'm happy if I can see my chin, let alone my cheekbones. Now I can see other things, though. I can see the difference between liberty and facism. I can see the difference between self-determination and manipulation and control. I can see the difference between life lived in an autonomous and authentic manner and life stolen away for the use and abuse of others.
Please take a moment to remember the young people who died on their campus that day, the yound men who fought and died in the wars that support our liberty and freedoms and the wars that didn't. May their souls rest in peace.

It's very humbling to have that hindsight and learn from it. Imagine! Students attending school and peacefully protesting war and get killed for it. That alone is a kind of war itself. And for what? Just doesn't make any sense. I will remember those who lost their lives and the families who loved them.
