I've been off-line since Friday dealing with much stress because of a computer virus.
I'm back on (. . . . at least on DS. I'm still looking for my passwords to other sites. . .) and trying to clean up the mess. The good news is that it didn't corrupt my documents. I'm pretty well backed up, but, like finding my usually unused passwords, it would still be a mess. (Be sure to back up ANYTHING you don't want to lose!!!)
The tech people (at Stapels ---- Kudos for a good job!!!) said they were seeing a lot of somthing called "A V." It gives you a very MicroSoft look-alike security page that tells you you have just contracted a virus. Then there's an option to "click here" for the fix. I don't know whether the page that tells you you've picked up the virus actually gives you the virus or if you get it when you click to fix it.
Obviously, just seeing a message that told me I'd gotten a virus sent me running to the bathroom feeling sick, then back to my laptop, totally panicked.
The whole weekend was awful, and I'm trying to get everything back to my easy-click comfort settings. It was an unwanted and unwelcome "vacation" from my computer, on which I spend plenty of time, but couldn't while it was in the shop. When I wasn't driving back and forth to the repair shop, bringing forgotten items they needed, from home, I was enjoying time with friends or elbow deep in my garden. Missed being on this board, though.
Please be alert to any screen that pops up about viruses -----even if it looks official. Maybe all the savvy people already know about this, and I'm the last one to be out of the loop, but make sure you've got all your Net security on. (In almost fifteen years, this was my first infection. It could have been worse, but it was bad enough.)
Stay SAFE. Practice good SELF-CARE!!!!

Also I needed a reminder to back up stuff on my computer...I keep forgetting to....Will be watching!...You just don't know how much your computer and whats on it and in it means to you..Until an experience like yours...

So, thanks for sharing, Ilene. I can be a little lazy about back up, so I am just going to take a break and get that done now.
Before this, I'd just been careful and LUCKY.
