Abuse is a general term for the treatment of someone that causes some kind of harm (to the abused person, to the abusers themselves, or to someone else) that is unlawful or wrongful. No one deserves abuse, period. Abuse can be emotional, physical, or sexual.
I say hi to the dog before him. He says to the dog, "sometimes she's a good wife."
I remind him about all the things I do around here so he doesn't have to. "Yeah but sometimes you bitch a lot."
"So do you. Have you listened to yourself when you come home from work?"
"I have a right to do that."....this happened yesterday but it still has me down. It's my birthday week, and he has said something down to me pretty much every day.

He will never "get it" do yourself a favor and go. I am 51. I waited too long. Go now. You deserve a good life and you deserve kind words, quiet times, peace, love, comfort....I could go on......

Maybe when he gives you your gift, you could use that as an opportunity to say what you REALLY could use for your B-day is some respect. That's free and the gift that keeps giving.
If not, maybe the next gift to yourself can be some freedom from the jerk.
