Physical & Emotional Abuse Support Group
Abuse is a general term for the treatment of someone that causes some kind of harm (to the abused person, to the abusers themselves, or to someone else) that is unlawful or wrongful. No one deserves abuse, period. Abuse can be emotional, physical, or sexual.

I posted my story previously about my ex and his emotional abuse. I am now realizing he was very manipulative as well. Once it ended I feel all his words are resurfacing and I am seeing them in a different light, since I was in what it seemed like a fog before. Literally--I felt I was in a haze. Drunken almost. When it ended I cried out of relief, even though minutes before I was begging my parents not to end the engagement. I woke up.
I am now trying very hard to heal. To have a healthy perspective so I do not become jaded or non-trusting, or that I fall into the traps of emotional manipulation again.
Here's a couple examples of manipulation I had with my ex:
My ex fianc, before engagement, said I can decorate the upstairs floor with furniture and put my taste into the decor. He designed the house and decorated it but he ensured the upstairs floor would be my space to paint or for my expression.
After engagement I ran a few ideas by him and he became on edge and his voice became a bit harsh. He said "What? It's like you want to come and change everything!" I said that he gave me this and I felt now that things are official he isn't letting me be myself. His voice was stern so I said I had to go and hung up. He texted me saying "How could you hang up on me?" I said I didn't, and he said "And you don't wait for a response before hanging up?" He called later and said I stabbed him and hurt him a lot when I doubted his sincerity but it's okay he forgives me and he still loves me and twisted his words in such a way that I had to apologize. He said "I was so hurt that you doubted my sincerity that I didn't even put soap on when I was in the shower because I kept thinking about that. But it's okay I still love you. Even though you stabbed me, I will always love you." He said we will both decorate and I thought my goodness...how incredibly immature and stupid am I for making such a big deal about furniture? He took even small things about my expression and made them and me seem so stupid.
All I knew was when my parents were gifting me with rugs and such and I had gifts from friends for the house, I dreaded asking him where we could put them because I knew he'd get upset and say he doesn't like it and I was "changing" how he set things. I felt like I had to ask his permission. Though he said I had full freedom before engagement.
EVERY argument we'd had since then, he kept bringing that furniture incident to prove how I wanted to break his lifestyle and how I am SO immature and do not know how to be wise.
For example I told him some of my future dreams/goals for my secular and religious endeavors (though I mentioned them before engagement too and he was fine with it) and he suddenly he became overwhelmed and said I cannot take some classes for at least 3-4 years because my education will take attention away from family and I will become extreme and negligent. He had an aunt who became super involved in her studies and neglected her children, and he kept projecting that on me though I kept ensuring him it wouldn't be the sae...to calm him and soothe him. He said he was going to see if he could trust me and stated I could not take classes until he could trust me and I did this to myself because of my lack of wisdom and immaturity. He said I shot myself in the foot, just like the furniture ordeal. He sighed and said in a broken, hurt tone, "Maybe I'm not the guy for you. If you want to be superwoman and take all these classes and save the world then I'm not the guy. We can break the engagement now if you want. I will even help look for this guy for you because I love you THAT much. I didn't realize you were so stubborn." Families are involved...I felt trapped. He manipulated me Always...using my flexibility and softness to his advantage. He said I had to promise not to take take classes and go to hooka with him to prove I'm not stubborn or too rigid. And then when he would get his way he'd say, "my love? Promise you won't leave me? Promise you won't resent me? And you won't make our kids resent me? Please don't leave me? I've never loved anyone like I have loved you."
He was broken and my heart went out to him. And yet he always made me feel guilty I wasn't showing him my love (he wanted me to talk to him sexually)...nothing was enough for me to prove that I loved him...and yet when I would try to be romantic he would tell his parents and close friends, "Gosh she is so obsessed with me." And make me seem desperate.
Nonetheless. After it ended I still am reflecting. Was I at all immature/unwise at all or was he he emotionally manipulative? I'm sincerely asking. Did I do the right thing sharing my ideas passionately...or do guys generally hate that? For next time should I be more subdued?
I just feel like I have to get myself back again but I'm still thinking if I need to be different, if I need to change something so I am not immature next time like he always said I was.
How do you get yourself back and heal? I do not want to be emotionally manipulated anymore:(

You asked how do you get yourself back and heal... It takes time and effort. Time alone will not heal us from the trauma of abuse.
Please give yourself the gift of self-love, self-care and as much time as you need to heal before getting into another relationship.
~healing hugs~
Trauma affects us physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. It also affects the brain which prevents us from making wise and healthy decisions.
I understand you want to do better. And you will after you heal. Healing from trauma isn't about having a list of do's and don'ts. It is about waiting to start another relationship until you have had a couple of years of intense therapy.
Right now, you seem to be operating off his words and his judgments. Sadly this is normal for someone coming out of an abusive relationship.
When you're in an abusive relationship, you're damned if you share your thoughts. The more you say, the more ammunition you give the abuser. The more you resist or argue w/them, the more danger you put yourself in.
The one thing I know for sure is:
The only thing you can do so it doesn't spiral is to not get into another relationship AND get therapy. If you (or anyone coming out of an abusive relationship) don't get therapy, you are bound to end up in another abusive relationship.
Abusers blame their 'source' (you) for their actions. That puts you in a lose-lose-lose position. Nothing you do will be right. And there is NOTHING you can do to change an abuser except to stay. Then, I promise you the abuser will change. THE ABUSER WILL GET WORSE.
Getting therapy moves the focus off of the abuse and on to you and your healing. In therapy you will learn to recognize the red flags and to set and keep boundaries, including going No Contact. With the right therapist and modality, you will also be able to begin to reverse the damage the trauma of abuse has done to your brain. This damage includes, but is not limited to PTSD, trauma bonding, Stockholm Syndrome and the inability to be able to see all of the choices available to you.
I hope this helps.
for me to read.
So often, MTC responds
with such wise and
articulately written replies
that I almost can't think of
anything that I'd add. I'm
so glad she did that here
because I still feel what
you wrote in my gut, that
I couldn't even begin to
lay out anything nearly
as throroughy MTC
already has done.
Please make sure
you practice self-care
at every single opportunity.
This will help you build
yourself inside, which
is the kind of inner
strength which will
help you maintain
your stability and
serenity.
Last, though MTC has
touched on this. . . . .
anything that he's told
you about yourself
were LIES.
DELETE them from
your memory. They
were lies intended
to control you.
Define yourself
as you decide to
define yourself.
You are the author
of your psyche and
of your life.
You obviously have
many notable
inner resources.
They have already
and will continue
to serve you well.
Take good care.
A support and empowerment group. A group of abuse survivors will meet once a week usually and find strength in each other's stories. Also often there will be work on learning new ways to approach a relationship and what to look out for in an abusive one.
Here is a link to a list of domestic violence support services many of which hold groups for healing. The list includes support for adults abused in childhood so just pick and choose for your State and your area.
I know this list to be a good one because I researched it.

Good luck on your healing journey.
I've never hurt anyone before...and him crying just plagued me mentally. My family keeps telling me "he broke your heart first" but it is hard to see that. I feel I stabbed him, that I wasn't patient enough for him.
If you want to read the whole story, here it is. http://www.dailystrength.org/c/Physical_Emotional_Abuse/forum/20348217-he-abusive-why-do
Before I do this I'm just wondering...was there anything I did wrong? The first step of healing is take responsibility.
My reflection/guilt: I wasnt able to be honest with him and tell him how I was feeling. I was weary hed deny it and twist my words...but I never tested it so in the end he was the one who I betrayed because he said "If you would have told me I would have changed. Why didnt you talk fo me instead of go and tell your parents? We could have handled this like adults but you chose to make this spiral out lf control." And then he said "But I forgive you and am praying for peace in your heart. Hopefully you learned something for the next guy that comes around so you dont make the same mistakes."
I'm betting that you weren't able to be honest with him because something deep inside of you KNEW it wasn't ok or safe to do so.
Please believe me when I say there is NOTHING you could have done better as far as your abuser was/is concerned.
Therapy is your best bet to get you out of this self-criticism and worry about not being good enough. It's really hard to get his words out of your head/heart. Sheer will power won't do it. He has really done a number on you, as most abusers do. You have been brainwashed.
Please focus on you and your healing. Therapy with a QUALIFIED therapist is your best chance at healing and changing your thought patterns.
That's absolutely perfect.
His parting MINDFUCK.
Please, Hon. . . . . .
Turn your focus onto
your own well being
and recovery from
this manipulative
shit-head's intentional
spirit and soul killing
abuse.
As long as you keep
your focus on him,
on his words,
on his LIES. . . . .
you're handing him
CONTROL over
not merely your past
but your FUTURE as well.
I hope you'll take some
of the suggestions here
and begin the journey back.
Please. . . . . .
RECLAIM YOUR LIFE!!!!!!
You're a precious soul
in every sense of the word.
EVICT him from your thoughts!!!!!!
(Try doing my Clarifying
Index Card Exercise. It's
one step in a process that
may help clear your head.)
Sending you hugs
and wishes for
much better days
very soon.
He manipulated me so deeply even though we werent living together. I am so thankful I was pulled out. God knows what my mind would have been once we were married.
Thanks again ladies. Means a lot. Hopefully I will heal soon and stop feeling this pain and guilt.
Mine would also say "you stabbed me in the heart."
Decorating was an issue.
He would still and always love me even though I upset him and was immature.
Also, he accused me of worrying about our family first if I had any concern for the others.
Women's jobs were to maintain the household, men providers. I was to show respect, and on and on.
Please take good care of yourself and do practice self care. I vowed to myself to never become involved with a man that has a temper.
I didn't mind being a housewife because I thought he was such a good man. Plus I think a guy who honors motherhood is something wonderful.
But I didn't like how he slowly belittled my intelligence and didn't even want me taking online classes, not even once a week, because it would take attention away from him and the house. His excuse? He was traumatized by his aunt's negligence.
And yet...later on he said he got me a job in his business, to work with him and go on business trips with him.
It wasn't about respecting who I was, it was his ego, possessiveness and control all masked with love and care so I was manipulated the entire time.
Last time we were together I was getting bagels and he claimed that the owner of the bagel shop n I got nervous when he came in to pay, so I must hv been flirting w him all along while we were together..jealousy was another flaw. He would buy me clothes to wear out with him. Anyway, it would have gotten way worse if you didn't leave.
I feel better now and am seeing a counselor that specializes in treating victims of abuse. I made the call to the women's center where I live after being off their list for a year. I am dedicated to moving forward now. I think it's good that you were able to share your story, I for one appreciate it.
My ex was the opposite in the sense he wanted me to wear more fitted clothing and more make-up because he wanted to "show (me) off to the world."
But he did threaten me a couple times and say "If you dare cheat on me I'm gonna send you back to your mama's house." This was before we were living together! He had deeply rooted insecurities and he knew that too, which is why he'd always ask me in his broken voice not to leave him (oh that killed me).
Thank God.
Best of luck to you, and good job moving on.
