Abuse is a general term for the treatment of someone that causes some kind of harm (to the abused person, to the abusers themselves, or to someone else) that is unlawful or wrongful. No one deserves abuse, period. Abuse can be emotional, physical, or sexual.

For those of us who have or had
a mother whose parental skills
were lacking (or worse). . . . . . .
maybe we can look at today
as our personal
RE-mothering Day.
Maybe we can "re-mother"
or re-parent . . . . our self.
Maybe we can learn how
to give ourselves what our
mothers weren't able to.
Maybe we can learn how
to teach ourselves the
self-care that our
mothers weren't able to.
Maybe we can (maybe
we SHOULD), find a way
to nurture and nourish
ourselves in all the ways
that we didn't get from
our caregivers, when
we were growing up.

And I want to share a hopeful story. This is especially for you, tk. Broken relationships can be made whole again. I felt I had failed my children miserably as they were growing up because I was in an abusive relationship with their father, I became ill. and was not as present for them as I feel I should have been. After I left him, I learned that, unbeknownst to me, he had even abused them outside of my presence and knowledge.
My youngest daughter just called to wish me a happy Mother's Day. She is in her thirties.. She had such wishes and love for me. And, the sweetest thing of all (though I hope to never take her up on it) is that she told me I am welcome to come and live with her family at any time. She said that her husband, Scott, said he would love that and "Your mom is so sweet." She went on to express how much she would really love this, and even fantasizes about me being in the car with her while she does her shopping, errands, goes to the spa, goes for cheesecake, etc. she said, "We could be best buds like the golden girls and nothing would make me happier." I am so touched. Wow, in spite of all my failures, she loves me. :)
I would like to offer my love and appreciation to you and all the ladies on here who have shared their knowledge, stories, and loving care to me.
Whether or not you are younger or older than me, and whether or not you have children of your own or not, you have all been my mothers at some point... telling me the things I would have wanted and needed to hear from my own.
Happy Mother`s Day to you all! The guys will get their own post on Father`s Day ;)

Rockin - well said. Many here have been so supportive, helpful and nurturing - in a motherly way. I feel the same about many of you here. Regardless of age, life experience plays a big part.
