Physical & Emotional Abuse Support Group
Abuse is a general term for the treatment of someone that causes some kind of harm (to the abused person, to the abusers themselves, or to someone else) that is unlawful or wrongful. No one deserves abuse, period. Abuse can be emotional, physical, or sexual.

Hi All!
It has been a while since I checked in! Everything is beginning to go okay. I have my good days and bad days. I am beginning to feel more stable without having so much drama and abuse in my life.
I did go through a dark period over Christmas due to the uncertainty of my family situation.
As many of you know, my parents are going through a divorce after 42 years of marriage. My father is a diagnosed narcissist and my mother also falls somewhere on the narcissistic spectrum. In the past, my mother was also diagnosed with bi-polar disorder. In any case, there is something wrong with her... I also wonder if years and years of on-going abuse at the hands of my father, and before that her father, has something to do with the difficulty of a clear-cut diagnosis.
I originally cancelled holiday plans with my family because I had ever-increasing anxiety attacks. They became so bad in the days leading up to Christmas that I had to pull-over when driving a few times. I didn't cancel because I did not want to see my family, but because of the stress. I was also secretly hoping that by cancelling, it would act as a wake-up call for them to get their sh*t together and begin acting better towards my sister and I.
I was really hurt by the time I had made the call... I felt unwanted and unloved. My parents are rather wealthy, however my mom has been putting on this poor as a pauper act the last few months. At first I accredited this to a change in lifestyle... Easy enough to understand. Then pieces began to click together... I figured out how much money she had taken from their joint savings account, her spousal support and her salary. Right now, she has more money than I do. However, she insisted that I pay for Christmas dinner because I wouldn't steal from items from my childhood home. She said this cost her a great deal of money, and that if I wanted my sister (a weak point, as she knows) to have a great Christmas, it would be up to me.
A few weeks before Christmas, I found out she had flown up to Alaska to visit her father (who has never even acknowledged my existence... Not once... No birthday card or anything... For my entire life). She had enough money for that, but not enough money to make a nice Christmas dinner at home. This really stuck out to me... And really made me feel unloved.
So I bailed on Christmas with the hopes that my mom would apologize for her insensitivity. Of course that didn't happen...
Instead on December 23rd, I sucked it up called my parents and said I still wanted to join them individually to celebrate the holiday. My dad was nice and pleasant about it, whereas my mom told me that she no longer had 'room for me'. I hung up in tears, and cried for the next 8 hours. She eventually called me back, and told me she had changed her plans and wanted to see me... Oh, and she still wanted me to bring dinner!
I stock up on $150 worth of groceries and wine, and try to get into the spirit of things.
Christmas day comes, and my mom calls me up at 11am and demands that I go over to her condo immediately because 'she has other plans'. Since we had originally planned to meet at 2pm, I was still in my pajama's. She insisted that I come over right away and shower at her place. I was blindsided by all of this, and after attempting to set a boundary only to be ignored, hop in my car and head over.
The entire time we were there my mom ignored my sister and I, and talked only about herself. It was horrible... The worst it has ever been since I was a child... My sister and I head out, and end up spending the rest of the day crying.
I felt unloved and unwanted, as did she.
I decided not to see her until maybe March (her birthday), because I could not take any more of this pain.
She began calling me yesterday and today... She wants to talk to me and see me. I do not want to see her. I am trying to think of a way to deal with this situation that will not cause complete alienation between her and I.
I really need some help and suggestions!!
XOXO

My mom isn't a N but quite self centered. I realized how much it drained me to spend time with her. Sadly I realized there was no relationship, only duty. I've told her a few times things I needed as boundaries and she continually forgets them. I've also told her that if she didn't respect those boundaries I would need to take care of myself by spending less time with her. (My only sister lives far away). So contact is certainly something she let me know shes wanted.
Soooooo, my point is this. She's repeatedly ignored my specific boundaries so I've begun implementing the consequences I said would result. At first I felt horrible not being there whenever she wanted me. I am her only close family member. Yet this is the conclusion I came to. She had within her power and ability to continue a "relationship" with me but.....she would RATHER continue her own wishes and agenda KNOWING the consequences of doing so. Therefore she has made the choice, I have not abandoned her. She can chose at any time to respect my boundaries giving me the ability to spend more time with her. I no longer feel the guilt.
Having a relationship with someone is not a right, but a privilege. Even with parents. What I hear from your story is your mom, too, is choosing toxic behavior over a relationship with you. Why then, should you feel bad for not prioritizing what she is unwilling to prioritize?
What I'm hearing is this relationship is very unhealthy...for all of you. Is it in your best interest to keep status quo at the expense of your health? What I also note is your toxic relationship with her is also going to give you an incredible handicap to setting boundaries with others. Whatever you gain is lost in dealing with her bc she's only reinforcing unhealthy connection.
I hear a ring of familiarity when you mention not talking to her again until her bday....obligatory, correct? Are you already dreading it? My advice would be to set up boundaries AND consequences. Write it in a letter so she can not misunderstand you and you can speak what needs to be said.
I'm sorry for this drama! HUGS!!!
Otherwise I would say she's going through some stuff, not that I'm excusing her treatment of you and your sister by any means. But maybe you can suggest she lean on someone else, like a friend or therapist, to help her deal with the divorce and whatever other issues she spent all day talking about herself. And keep your distance as needed until she gets settled into her newly single life.
My parents just got divorced 3 years ago after 39 years together. It brings up boundary issues with adult children. As in how much role do we have to take care of parents who are struggling emotionally? It's a weird role reversal and each person has to decide what they're willing to do and what they're comfortable with.
I would imagine she felt scattered and weird about having her first Christmas in a condo and not at your childhood home where she lived for a long time. However that does not justify hurting your feelings and jerking you around like her personal puppet. Hugs xx
you're going through.
My mother was a narcissist.
I know the drill.
Here are my suggestions:
The first is to
limit your interaction
with your mother, to
the barest minimum.
The second is that
when you do have
interaction, share
NOTHING of any
kind of emotional
connection.
Interact with her
as if she were a
sales clerk or a
bus driver. Take
care of "business"
and nothing more.
Limit what you say
to the totally superficial.
Third, if she calls,
take her call but
keep it extremely
brief. Be courteous.
Be civil. Be respectul.
Be relatively "flat," in
regards to emotion.
Draw a boundary
around sharing
anything about
your inner self.
You wouldn't do
that with a bank
teller. You wouldn't
do that with a taxi
driver. Now. . . .
don't share your
inner self with
your mother.
Be civil.
Be courteous.
Be respectful.
Anything more
and you open
the door for her
to abuse you.
If these suggestions
don't work, the last
one I have is to cut
all ties.
I have one sibling.
Our mother taught
him to abuse me.
I haven't shared one
interchange with him
in over fifteen years.
We live in the same
small state. I think
he's still alive. I'd
probably hear from
someone, if he wasn't.
He was not at my last
two weddings. I hope
he's alright. I wish him
no ill, but I won't ever
invite him back into
my life.
It brings me no joy to
have had to "divorce"
him. but I began
healing the day I
cut him off.
I'd never tell anyone to
do that. But I urge you
to inject some emotional
distance into the relationship.
It will help you survive
her abuse.
Sending you hugs
and healing thoughts.
Take good care!
I'm so sorry you are dealing with this
I agree with each and everyone of your posts. In my family, we use passive-aggressiveness to communicate. I am trying very hard to use other methods of communication. However, we have all experienced that speaking directly to an abuser only serves as an invitation of further abuse.
I called her earlier today before I saw the latest responses and told her that I was taking a break from the family to work on myself. I politely ended the phone call, while still reassuring her that I loved her.
GISMH, you are so right when you say that 'a relationship is a privilege'. Since my relationship with my family is riddled with abuse, it doesn't take much to push me over the edge into not wanting to have anything to do with them at all.
I still want to have a relationship with them, once I have had a change to regain some of my self-esteem.
Ilene, I am going to take your advice and set boundaries around myself and my inner emotional world. After reading your post, I recognized it is something I need to do in my everyday life too.
Daydreamer, I do believe she was being passive-aggressive and was angry at me for changing my mind. I also think she is deeply hurt by events in her life. Moving into a new place. Ending a marriage. Losing some financial security. BIG CHANGES!!! It is enough to stress out anyone!
I just can't forget the hurt and pain she has caused in my life. Unfortunately, she has proven herself to be a person I do not feel safe around.
This has been a year of changes, and I feel many more (good) changes coming!! Sheesh, am I glad 2013 is over!!!
Thank you again, everyone, for your help!
What you are dealing with would make anyone feel overwrought - I can't believe your mother would put you through so much, and yet I also can :(
Huge hugs and hope this helps xxx
