Physical & Emotional Abuse Support Group
Abuse is a general term for the treatment of someone that causes some kind of harm (to the abused person, to the abusers themselves, or to someone else) that is unlawful or wrongful. No one deserves abuse, period. Abuse can be emotional, physical, or sexual.

My ex was very emotionally abusive (criticizing, ignoring me for days, disregarding my needs, putting in ear plugs if I started crying, going to strip clubs w/o telling me, lying, flirting w/ other girls, refusing to kiss me or sleep w/ me, abandoning me in situations where I couldn't get home (once he had my purse and left), the other time I was out of town and didn't know where our hotel was and he ditched me, not telling me he had a serious std until after we'd slept together, etc), but I'm still have trouble wrapping my mind around what happened -- has anyone felt like this? I can't seem to make any sense of his behavior.
On the flip side, he seemed "super responsible" w/ money things, good at his job, paid bills on time, was super smart and educated (had every credential in his field), had a great social persona (well liked), dressed well, worked out, and seemed like the nicest and sweetest guy.
There were days he was loyal and would wipe away my tears, and he'd look at me with such warmth and compliment me, and get me cold medicine when I was sick, or just hug me for hours, and say "you're the most beautiful girl in the world" before we fell asleep, and other days he didn't care if I lived or died (and caused the tears himself).
He yelled at me for hours when I accidentally bought an extra bottle of windex. He didn't speak to me for three days after I threw away a bottle of expired ketchup (he'd wanted me to keep it). He was furious and wouldn't look me in the eye. My printer didn't work one day (as it often didn't), and I said to myself "hmm not printing" and he flew into a rage and insisted that "it does work." He wouldn't fix it though, and yelled at me for "undermining his authority." I was so afraid of him, that I hid the kitchen knives while he was in the bathroom, just in case he got really mad.
But he also would do nice things for me, like carry things and say supportive things about my career, or give me rides places. He'd surprise me with really nice gifts, or take me to dinner, or buy me my favorite cupcakes just because. He'd make sure I had practical things like paper towels, or groceries, and would buy them in bulk so I wouldn't run out. He'd text me nice things during the day, and say "honey I'm home" and hug me when he came home. He said he'd never felt closer to anyone, and I was the nicest person he'd known.
He'd threaten to move us to a foreign country where I couldn't speak the language, and said I had no say in it. He took a job with odd hours that I didn't want him to take.
It was like he was 2 completely different people. One side was like a 5 year old sweet little boy. He seemed harmless and loving. He just wanted to cuddle all of the time. The other was like a rebellious (and evil) teenager, out to hurt me.
I have a long list of bad things he did to me. But it seems like the whole thing happened to someone else. I find his behavior very confusing, even now.
I'm having trouble making sense of it.
He changes his mind constantly, sometimes 5-6 times. Each day, it will be something different.
He said he would pay for the divorce. And then he said he thought I shouldn't have paid for a lawyer, and I should have done it all myself, so he doesn't want to pay the fee. I know he'll continue to change his mind more times, and in the end, I'm unsure if he'll actually pay for it.
I moved out 5 months ago, and he was not sad at all about the break-up. He was completely neutral when I moved out, and he offered to help me look for apartments. It was so odd. He never seemed sad, and he immediately went on dating sites. He said "why not date? It only makes sense."
It wasn't to make me mad, because he hid most of it from me (emailing girls, lying and going to bars w/o wearing his ring etc.).
I asked him to wait a week, to date, until I wasn't sleeping in the same bed! He removed profiles from the sites I knew of, but put them onto sites I hadn't heard of -- I still found them. And he offered to let girls sleep at his apartment (within a few days of me leaving).
So I thought. Okay, he doesn't love me. He doesn't care. He probably just used me for things that were beneficial to him to have me around for. I got angry and started to accept that, and decided not to help him at all.
I've just started a divorce (mutual of course) a couple of days ago. He just needs to sign the papers.
Then, out of the blue, he brought me a gift from his trip, a card, and asked me to get together for Christmas. I couldn't afford to fly home, and my friends were all out of town, so I broke down and went to dinner. It was fine, and then he wanted to get together the next day. And now he wants to go out tomorrow as well -- I'm not sure if I even want to go again. It was prob bad to even see him.
Is he trying to just get me to not make him pay for anything by trying to smooth it over? He really wanted me to spend the night when he was suddenly tired, but I didn't. Maybe he's just lonely?
Not that it matters, but the "why" question is bothering me.
I just don't understand what he's doing. He doesn't want to be together at all -- I'm sure of that. So why bother inviting me to these holidays? Perhaps he had no one else to hang out with? But even so, why bother? He then said I could stay on his insurance until the divorce ends, and use his credit card for groceries, etc.
But of course, in a day, he may likely change his mind about that too.
He didn't make any physical moves towards me, but of course, didn't really want to sleep w/ me while we were together (he prefrered porn, strip clubs, flirting w/ other girls, etc. -- I promise I'm not unnatractive at all). So it wasn't that he wanted anything physical from me.
Sooo confused...any input would be helplful.

hmm, ya I've considered that he might be a sociopath. But sometimes he seems so human...even sensitive. I really feel for him...sometimes he seems so lonely and like his life is just an act, and I feel really sad for him. There is something very, very cold about him that I don't think I'll ever understand. He's told me that he's "a robot," and I always thought he was kidding. Maybe he wasn't.
Isn't that the hardest thing, to see someone you thought was human, and realize that they really aren't. I'll never understand it.
He did say my emotions are like a rollarcoaster, and his are just a steady baseline. I thought that was just a guy/girl difference, but I didn't realize he has close to no feelings.
I just don't know if I could ever really accept that though, even though it is probably true. He's very approval-hungry, and it looks like feelings to me, but maybe isn't.
Sorry to hear about the narcissistic thing in your case. That's just as hurtful. It's so confusing to have such extremes all in one person. There can be no generality of "this person is like this." They really are both evil and good all at once. It makes no sense at all.
Ya, I probably just shouldn't speak to him anymore. I was doing better when he was out of town for a while.
He asked me to text him to go see the big christmas tree tomorrow, and I'm going to have to try not to. I really wanted to see the tree, but I will just have to fight that urge.
It's just sad that people can harm others so much. I guess I'm not perfect for having allowed it to even happen though. I guess all we can do is strengthen ourselves.
as for why he's suddenly wanting to spend time with you-who knows? if could me manipulating you to make the divorce easier, or something else..
but why hang around to find out.
be happy that you were able to get away so easily! other people here are not so lucky.
as hurtful as it is that he flirted, or worse, when he was with you, that could be the luckiest thing ever to happen to you in that relationship. it could have been super dangerous for you if he was tied only to you-things could have gotten ugly.
stay far away, and get this divorce done as soon as possible.
try not to waste any of your precious time trying to figure out why he is doing, or has done the things that he does..
just get yourself far away from him..
then like a day or two later he would be telling me that i was fat and ugly and that i needed a nose job.
then probably later that day he would want to cuddle and be so close wrapped around me and tender and sweet and apologetic or bring me flowers and say that he loves me.....
it's a crazy feeling not knowing exactly who you are living with. which one is the real one....
he used to say he felt like a robot too. he never feels happy...ever. he hasn't felt happy in years. but he can certainly fly into a rage and cry.
the day before he pulled the knife on me, he held me for hours telling me how much i meant to him.
PLEASE don't take chances now that you're out of there.
is the ability to charm,
to confuse,
to convince,
to take you in,
spin you around
and burgle your soul.
The core of sociopathy
is to
confuse.
DON'T BE CONFUSED.
RUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That's what they do. That's how they get their kicks, by keeping you off track. As soon as he thinks he has your where he wants you, even if you are not living with him, even if it's only to trust him a little with your emotions, he will switch back to the creep that he is, the one that made you move out.
Don't fall for it. He's a master manipulator. Stay away.....Don't give him the opportunity.
After thinking it over, I decided I didn't want to see him today -- even though it meant missing on out seeing the big tree, that's fine. He kept texting me, asking if I wanted to do various things (this is odd, and we never hang out, and he hadn't texted me in months). I think it's just because he had a day off and was lonely or something.
He then offered to take me to get groceries (he knows this is attractive to me, since I can only carry home a few bags at a time, and the store by me is pricey -- and he goes to a cheaper store where I can get more things).
I said I couldn't go for a few hours, but could later. And he said forget it, "there will be a line later." So I said that was fine and not a problem. (I honestly didn't really even want to go...)
Then a few hours later he again insists on going, and asks when I can go. I say in an hour. And he says "I've left. meet me outside in 30."
I found it really tough to say no to him, especially when he is suppose to give me a check for the divorce (which he hasn't mentioned).
We go, and I couldn't figure out why he's even taking me there, since I know he doesn't really care about me. We come back, and I gave him some snacks, and then he said he'd give me the divorce money "next time." And said next week we could go to a specialty store for some items this store didn't have -- I wasn't even asking for these items, but he kept bringing it up, and saying he needed items from that store also, so we'd go. ??
It's like he wants to ensure he has someone to hang out w/,and is almost using that money as a carrot perhaps?
He doesn't seem to really smile or laugh much anymore. He only laughed when I joked that I'd drive. And he laughed really hard. I didn't think it was that funny...
It didn't hurt my feelings like it would have in the past, because I know that he's a sociopath now. But it still makes me feel odd.
I now sociopaths want approval. Maybe that's what he's seeking? Or perhaps he likes the control of making me do things before he'll give me the check?
Not that it matters really, but I just find it to be such an odd situation.
Protect yourself.
Dahlia, our ex's sound like clones!! I can't believe the similarities. Perhaps these guys should be friends and just turn gay and marry one another, so that they can see what it's like from the others side. :) hehe
Seriously sounds like the same guy! Ya I think they always want to look like "the good guy" to themselves also. People see through it though. None of my friends have stayed friends with him, despite his charm, and one of his friends even said she didn't even really like him and wanted to be my friend instead -- I didn't ask anyone to choose sides of course.
I can't believe he didn't care that 1) your cat could have died 2) it bit you! ouch 3) you were crying -- I think it's that power/control thing is something. It's just not human not to care! Christmas is a vulnerable time, and he prob played on that a bit.
I'm so horrified by your story of him leaving you at your own birthday dinner, and making you stay w/ some near stranger!? omg!! :( and then yelling at you when he knew he was wrong -- I think they find situations where you're vulnerable (such as needing a ride) and play on that., and then confuse you so you forget what a bastard thing he just did (or things, plural).
Of course, my ex also yelled at me after ditching me on a crowded street while on vacation, where I didn't know where the hotel was or have a hotel key -- when I eventually found the hotel, made sure they let me into the room, and when he stumbled in drunk after lying and going to strip clubs all night, he yelled at me that it was (somehow) all my fault. When I started crying, a switch flipped (he got the reaction that made him feel powerful), and he hugged me and then became "nice." I decided to leave him that night though.
these bastards. let's get them out and get on w/ our lives.
Abusers are never happy, which is why they resort to this. But we will find a way to be. And we will win. Because we'll heal from what they do, and create a happy life, and a point will come where we'll never think of them again.
And they'll always think of us, but it won't matter.
I can just imagine how you felt on your vacation where he stranded you. It just blows your mind that they can treat you that way. That's absolutely disgusting that on top of leaving you stranded he left you to go get drunk and go to strip clubs. Gross.
I don't even get these men with their strip clubs and internet porn sites. They'd rather pay women for attention who could care less about them than receive it from women who loved them. It's so stupid and pathetic!
I agree, you are wise when you say we need to get them out and on with our lives.
I feel strong most of the time. But I still occasionally fall into a bit of depression and mourn that our marriage was nothing like I had hoped for. It's almost hard to comprehend things turned out like this. Being in this group is a great reminder that they will not change no matter how hard I try to change things. I feel like the danger I am in, is being in a weak moment and him being in one of his nicer moods and me falling back into it. It helps coming here and hearing from others going thru similar experiences.
You sound very clear headed and strong. Thank you so much for sharing your story. I think it helps to know we are not alone.
