Abuse is a general term for the treatment of someone that causes some kind of harm (to the abused person, to the abusers themselves, or to someone else) that is unlawful or wrongful. No one deserves abuse, period. Abuse can be emotional, physical, or sexual.

Yesterday, together with a handful of other women
from the Lower Naugatuck Valley, I was honored at
a fundraising luncheon. The award was in recognition
for the work I do, for the good of my community.
It was a beautiful day outside. Walking in, I was
given a corsage. The gentleman who nominated
me, someone who's benefitted from the HEAL circles,
was there, and shared the spotlight. I enjoyed both
my lunch, and my few moments at the lecturn, where,
I spoke just long enough and just well enough.
There were several nice presentations, gifted to the
honoress. My favorite was a beautifully printed
citation from the state legislature. I'd have immediately
scanned it and uploaded it onto my websites, but the
name printed on the citation they handed me, wasn't
mine. Ah well. I'm trying to let go of the disappointment,
reminding myself the printed piece is merely a token.
(Yes ---- I'm told that it will be reissued with my name.
They wrote "Irene," not even a misspelled variation of
Ilene, which would have been bad enough. ---- So I'll
try and patiently await the reissue.)
All the hoopla and spotlight were not something I'm used
to. It was simultaneously unsettling and enjoyable. It's nice,
and on the other hand, most particularly NOT what doing
good things to be useful to others. . . . is about. And
yet, as a human being, it feels good to have my best-of-
self actions appreciated.
Then, on the one hand, I feel like . . . . "Gosh. Couldn't
they have gotten my name on the citation, right?"
And on the other. . . . . . it shouldn't matter!!!!!!
Not to worry.
I don't expect to have to untangle lots more
of these dilemmas. My main hope anyway,
is simply that this honor will shine a bit of
a spotlight on HEAL and bring more people
who could use the support, to the circles.
In the evening I began teaching a new class.
It's been a little while since I've had a class run
and this is a new topic. It felt like a success,
both in regards to my presentation and also
how the students responded and received the
information.
Drove home from class feeling so satisfied
with the day ----- so good, overall.

And I also love that, while you don't do what you do for adulation or awards, you are at a place where you can appreciate the appreciation rather than (as we all have done I think in the past) putting yourself down and saying you didn't really deserve it. You well deserved it, you well earned it - as much for not striving for it as for the actual work you do.

Out of the other forums for abuse survivors, this is the one to me that feels like shelter, like home, safe and accepting. I'm sure in large part because of you and your efforts here.
