Physical & Emotional Abuse Support Group
Abuse is a general term for the treatment of someone that causes some kind of harm (to the abused person, to the abusers themselves, or to someone else) that is unlawful or wrongful. No one deserves abuse, period. Abuse can be emotional, physical, or sexual.
at home and at school.
Then I married men who
were dysfunctional in
various ways, the second
being primariy (but not
exclusively), emotionally
abusive.
It too me most of a lifetime
to pull myself together. I
still have rough edges
from what happened
in the earliest years.
But lots of work moved
me most of the way to
feeling GREAT.
Healing can happen.
I hope it does for you.
and 3 of my most serious relationships were abusive..
I'm staying single for a while, and will be very wary after this. hopefully I'll have healed enough to not end up in this situation again.
The way I see it, when it's all we've known, we keep getting the same thing because we don't know any better. The key is working therapy and counseling, learning about healthy relationships and boundaries, and gathering up the self-esteem and strength to break the bonds of abusive relationships before they even begin. We have to train ourselves to heal and to seek healthy relationships and behaviours.
It takes a lot of work. I began my journey in 2002 and I have a LOT more to go, but I'm a LOT better than I was. My long-time counselor marvels at the change I have gone through. People are CONSTANTLY telling me that I look so much better. I used to have permanent black eyes from anxiety, lack of sleep, and health problems. That has faded a lot, and people can just see a different expression on my face now. It feels great! We can all heal. It's SO worth it.
Yes, I still have to take a few meds for mental issues.. mainly anxiety and not sleeping, but I take less than I used to, and I feel it's a realistic hope that I can take even less in the future. It takes a lot of time for mental healing, but it is possible.
You were triggered, but there are ways to cope with triggers. Mostly I hear therapist say put yourself in the present because I disassociate a lot, but what helps me most is positive thinking... even when I don't believe it, I won't allow myself to wallow in the past and negatives. Ruminating does not help anything. It's ok at first to sort out your feelings, but after a point it just becomes obsessive and leads to more anxiety and triggers.
