Phobia Support Group
A phobia (from the Greek "fear"), is a strong, persistent fear of situations, objects, activities, or persons. The main symptom of this disorder is the excessive, unreasonable desire to avoid the feared subject. When the fear is beyond one's control, or if the fear is interfering with daily life, then a diagnosis under one of the anxiety disorders can be made.

I'm not sure whether or not it's unusual for an almost-21 year old to be afraid of the dark, or afraid of what might be in the dark, however you want to take it. But I've been that way since I was a small child.
I dont even like driving in the dark, I'm constantly looking in the rear-view mirror or on the side's of road's, worrying that a little animal might decide to dart out in front of the car.
I guess living in a winery for so long doesn't alway's help, there are kangaroo's bouncing around every where. You might be walking and all of a sudden you hear this htump-thump-thump as this big red roo jump's across your path or along one of the vine's so your imagination just goes bezerk.
I'm not worried about telling people that I'm scared of the dark. Most people dont give me shit over it to my relief =P But I'd like to know if there are any teenager's or adult's here who scare my phobia.

I am not afraid of teh dark but my BFF can't bear it, she has a night light she takes with her to hotels, has to have the interior light of her car on at night, that kind of thing. No one bothers her, either, but then, she is known to be licensed to carry a handgun, LOL.

I was really scared of the dark years ago. It kind of gave me sleeping problems....but somehow I got better. I started to do things in the dark with a light. I did things I enjoyed to very late in the night, but then I'd fall asleep from fatigue. I know it is an extremely weird way, but it did help. And not just with sleeping.

I'm afraid of what's "in the dark"... and pretty much the only way I can sleep in the dark is if my husband is in bed with me.. otherwise I have to have the hallway light on. Even when he is sleeping with me I still feel paranoid, like something is going to grab me or speak to me.. it terrifies me. Once my husband got pissed off because I insisted that he had to turn off the hallway light when he was already in bed and he got up and went to the guest bedroom and locked the door. I stood outside of his door bawling, screaming, and pleading for him to open the door because I was so afraid. It's embarrassing but at least I know I'm not the only one who is afraid of the dark.

Know what? I'm all over the internet talking about my severe phobia of tornadoes. But I've always been afraid of the dark. I think part of it is I've always believed in ghosts. I don't want to meet one in the dark, ever. I don't usually sleep without a light of some kind, such as even from our smoke alarms. Of course I also always prefer it when my hubby is there too. To keep the nasties at bay.!
