Hi - I used to be a member of this group and I don't know why but I fell of the list or something like that.
Today my heart is breaking. My dog, Heinze, that I rescued almost 14 years ago is dying. He has been with me through thick and thin. He is a beautiful, strong, brave, intelligent and sometimes funny guy. He's a black shepherd mix.
I am going to miss him so much and this happened so fast. It seems like just a few weeks ago he was playing with my other rescue in the back yard but he has been having seizures and he had a very big one last Thursday night. Since then he is having trouble walking and can hardly get his breath when he takes just a few steps. I took him to the vet when he first started going down hill and they said there was nothing they could do because this is just age. He's now almost 98 in people years and I guess they are right.
Heinze is like family - actually in light of what my family is like - he's better than family - he is my baby - my boy. This is such a hard part of having animals - they become such a part of one's life but they can't stay for the whole time - they have to go. I keep remembering when he was so strong and now he can barely get up - or lift his head very high.
Thank you for reading this - I needed to share my sorrow. I just don't know what I am going to do without him. If I didn't have my other dog, little Millie, that I got as a companion for Heinze - I would be so lost.
LindaJean I'm so sorry about your beautiful boy....This is such a sad part of being part of an animals life, we only seem to have them for such a short time. I know what it's like to lose a beloved dog, it was only just over 2 and a half years ago we lost our beloved Sofia to cancer. I will never forget our last hours together, and though she was technically my husband's dog, I took her for her last ride in the car and held her while she died. I miss her sweet ways, she really was an angel.
Just know we are all thinking of you....and when the time comes, say goodbye to your friend Heinze, knowing you gave him the best life he could have....one with much love.
Thank you so much - my hope is that he has a peaceful crossing. I will take your thoughts and keep them with us - it helps to stay strong for him. My prayer is that he will somehow come out of this and jump up barking with my other dog - chasing after whatever it is that they chased together not that long ago.
My little rescue, Lady, has started having seizures, too. So far, they just go away, but I know they will start having noticeable effects at some point.
I am so sorry about your fur baby; I understand how much it hurts.
I'm so sorry for your loss. Last year my ex put my kitty (16 year old) tabby "Jackson" to sleep. He wouldn't let me have him and he didn't want to deal with Jack's athritis. I got Otis shortly after losing my Jack. He has been a blessing.
Hang in there and know that when he does pass on he is going to a better/happier/healthier place where he will play and run free and be happy for ever. Hugs CathyM
This is one of the those times when we have to help our fur friends. It's amazing to me what a gift we can give them if need be. We I put my dog, Maynard, to sleep. It was time. He had held on so long, too long. Our bond was so close. But he Went to sleep peacefully, cradled in my arms and all his suffering was over. My cat queenie began slowing down the week before. She was a rescue cat, we'd gotten because of our horse barn. We'd all fallen in love with her. By the end of the week, her breathing was labored and the vet said there was no hope. Sometimes I wonder what people would do if they were offered the same options during those last painful days or week. My thoughts are with you. To love a pet is to be responsible for a pet in good and bad. You are a wonderful person. Heinze was very lucky, as is millie. Go with sunshine. Laurieannie
I too have a wonderful fury friend, who has been with me through thick and thin. He is just a mutt, but the most wonderful mutt to me. He is nearly 14, and while well and still sprightly, he is now having a bit of trouble jumping onto the bed, some times he just doesn't make it. The springs in his back legs are going rusty. I cannot bear to think of life without him, as he has been so faithful and loving. It is so hard to say goodbye to the best of the family, and I am dreading the time coming for me. I am so sorry to hear about your darling boy, and I too pray for a peaceful passing for him. This will be long, but I would like to share a poem with you, that my sister received from the vet when she had her darling cat leave her life. I think it is poignant.
If it should be I grow frail and weak,
And pain should wake me from my sleep,
Then you must do what must be done,
For this last battle can't be won.
You will be sad, I understand,
Don't let your grief then stay your hand,
For this day more than all the rest,
Your love and friendship stand the test.
We've had so many happy years,
What is to come will hold no fears,
You'll not want me to suffer, so
When the time comes, please let me go.
I know in time you will see,
It is kindness you do to me,
Although my tail it's last has waved,
From pain and suffering I've been saved.
Do not grieve that it should be you,
Who has to decide this thing to do.
We've been so close, we two, these years
Don't let your heart hold any tears.
I'm sorry I did not read the date of your post. I am so sorry for the loss of you beloved boy. It is so hard to lose the best member of your family.
I feel sorry for you. For the last 40 years we would get another dog when the last one passed. It really helps. Our Jack Russel Terrior is almost 14 yrs. old. He's been having seizures on & off for the last 5 yrs. We have been taking Jack almost everywhere we go. He had three operations so far. We think this will be the last year. I know Jimmy, our cat, will miss him too. Try to get another animal.
Just know we are all thinking of you....and when the time comes, say goodbye to your friend Heinze, knowing you gave him the best life he could have....one with much love.
