The loss of a pet or animal to which one has become emotionally bonded can be an intense loss, comparable with the death of a loved one. Whilst there is strong evidence that animals can feel such loss for other animals, this community focuses on human feelings, when an animal is lost, dies or otherwise is departed.

My friend is gone

I'm new to this group but my heart is breaking. My 16 year old cat had to be put down an hour ago. Im so sad and I hate this part of life. I have lupus and he always knew when I wasn't feeling well and he always comforted me. I feel so empty. I have to go now and tell my 11 year old. Thanks for listening.

I am so sorry for your loss. I lost my cat Lucy 10/28/13 and she was 16 years old. I had her since she was six months. She was sick for about a month getting weaker and not eating well. I kept hoping she would rally but it was not to be. It was her time to go to the Rainbow Bridge and be with my other two cats. I picture them running around and playing, and enjoying themselves. We will be together again. (((Big Hug)))

so sorry you had to do that but that probably was the best thing you could do for a sick kitty....and it is such a hard decision to make too....I am glad your 11yr old was not there with you...but try to get a copy of the rainbow bridge poem to share with them when you let them know that the kitty is gone now....that might cheer and allow the grief to come more easily....hugs bill
just google the rainbow bridge poem and print it off the internet...

Thank you for your support. I feel so raw, so hurt. He was my baby. It's so lonely here without him and I can't stop crying.

time to go rescue shopping for a new fur baby....that is not to take the place in heart of the other pet but to fill the heart with joy of new pet....they are such healthy friends for us....

I'm really sorry for your loss. I lost my dog last April. I had to put her down on her birthday. I know what you mean about feeling empty. I still cry. She was like a child to me.

I am really sorry for the loss of you dear cat. My sweet fur-baby Foxy had to cross the Rainbow Bridge just 4 days ago, on Thursday. Every day is a tiny little bit better, but it is going to take a long time to feel normal again. We still have another cat in the house and feeding times are especially hard for me. I'm glad that you got to have your cat for 16 years. We only had our Foxy for 9 months and that time seems so short because I loved her so very much. You will be in my thoughts this week as we try to go forward.
