The loss of a pet or animal to which one has become emotionally bonded can be an intense loss, comparable with the death of a loved one. Whilst there is strong evidence that animals can feel such loss for other animals, this community focuses on human feelings, when an animal is lost, dies or otherwise is departed.

My bunny

My bunny rabbit of nine years just died in my arms a few hours ago.

It was traumatic to see her like that but I know she wasn't in pain and I'm glad I was with her.

But I just am so traumatized right now. I have had her half my life. I feel lost and lonely and sad. She was such a big part of our lives.

Any words of encouragement would be appreciated. Thank you xo

I am so sorry for your lose. I lost my bunny on the 1st of December in my arms. It has broke my heart. So I know what you are going through. You need to remember the good times you had with your bunny.

I am so sorry for your loss. I understand as lost a very special cat over the summer. It still hurts, as we had a close bond, but she died in my arms with me telling her I loved her and that it was ok to go. I truly believe that her last meows were her way of vocalizing her love back to me. She knew she was loved, as did your bunny. There is no one right way to deal with grief, and it can be a nasty thing at times that hits you in many unexpected forms which seem to include nearly every emotion out there, or at least the potential for it.


It took a while, but when the time felt right and just the right cat came along, we adopted him from the local Humane Society, and I have become somewhat active in dog and cat rescue. I already do small animal and reptile rescue when I have the chance, and, no, none of my small animals are EVER fed to my snakes, not even if they die. Proper burial for all.
