The loss of a pet or animal to which one has become emotionally bonded can be an intense loss, comparable with the death of a loved one. Whilst there is strong evidence that animals can feel such loss for other animals, this community focuses on human feelings, when an animal is lost, dies or otherwise is departed.
My little man passed to Rainbow Bridge on New Years Eve. The in home vet we had was wonderful. She even wrote this beautiful tribute to him.

In loving memory of Princeton, an adorable golden retriever mix. Princeton's mom and dad had gone to a shelter to look at a dog his mom had seen on their website. That dog had already been adopted so they decided to look at the other dogs while they were there. Dad saw him first, the adorable blonde boy with big brown eyes, huddling in the corner of his run. He had been returned to the shelter twice, but his parents knew there was something special about this guy. That's how Princeton found his forever home. For the first year, Princeton was shy, wary of strangers, and frequently scared. With the constant love and tender kindness of his parents, Princeton simply flourished and blossomed into the boy he was meant to be.
He and mom frequently walked the trail near home. Princeton was the welcome wagon and greeter of all strangers he met. Almost everyone he came across commented on his smiling face and charm. Even as a senior, he retained a youthful look, and mom was often asked how old her puppy was. Whenever he boarded at the kennel, Princeton received the royal treatment. He always got the best run, the one closest to the door so he could watch all the action. The kennel employees could often be found cuddled up in Princeton's run with him, stroking his silky soft coat. His parents were right, there was definitely something special about Princeton. He just needed the right home and parents to bring out the best in him. Mom was just so proud of the wonderful boy her baby became.
Princeton was diagnosed with heart failure in August, 2012. This guy was a fighter, though. He knew how much his mom needed him this past year and he gave it all he had to stay by her side. They almost lost him in August, 2013 when he passed out at the vet's office. Princeton rallied again despite his guarded prognosis. Mom and dad could tell he was getting weaker, though. He was tired of fighting, tired of taking his medications. For the past few days, he hardly ate or slept. He gave them 10 wonderful years. They gave him the most loving, selfless thing they could. They set Princeton free so he wouldn't have to continue struggling and fighting. Mom read him some beautiful poems, kissed his silky head, and told him just how much she loved him as he crossed the rainbow bridge today. He will always be there, watching over them until they meet again. Rest in peace, darling. You will be missed by a lot of people here on earth.

RIP Princeton
Princeton was a regular here at LPR who won the hearts of each and every employee. He was always excited to see us and had the routine down pat. You could always find at least one of us in his room spooning him or giving him plenty of belly rubs. We know that you've already won the hearts of everyone in doggie heaven and you're probably being spoiled with lots of juicy treats Kennel 78 will forever be your room, Princeton! Rest easy, buddy. We miss you already!
