Pet Bereavement Support Group
The loss of a pet or animal to which one has become emotionally bonded can be an intense loss, comparable with the death of a loved one. Whilst there is strong evidence that animals can feel such loss for other animals, this community focuses on human feelings, when an animal is lost, dies or otherwise is departed.
Of course you're going through a very emotionally turbulent time right now. After all, it's normal to grieve when a dear pet passes but in your case, you had to see his lifeless body on the road.
You sound like a very loving pet owner so just remember the good life you gave to Jake while he was with you and hopefully that will give you comfort in the days and weeks to come.
I hope in time you can remember all the good times with Jake. He was very lucky to have such a warm and loving home.
My prayers go out to you during this very difficult time.
The sight of him that you are describing is very fresh in your mind right now and may be for some time, but it will not be as traumatic of a memory as each day goes by. Please don't let yourself feel guilty as this happens because it's part of the grieving process.
That's the one thing that I've learned from my pet loss. The guilt may be normal, but I had to let it go just as I did my beloved dog. They live forever in our hearts and memories!
I'm so sorry you saw him as you did. Hard as it may be, do your best to focus on another time. Use a picture - or a memory. Most of all ... remember ... he wasn't alone. Hugs.
