Pet Bereavement Support Group
The loss of a pet or animal to which one has become emotionally bonded can be an intense loss, comparable with the death of a loved one. Whilst there is strong evidence that animals can feel such loss for other animals, this community focuses on human feelings, when an animal is lost, dies or otherwise is departed.

...Dakota put down last night.
THE LAST BATTLE (aka If It Should Be) Author Unknown
If it should be that I grow frail and weak,
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then will you do what must be done,
For this last battle cant be won.
You will be sad I understand,
But dont let grief then stay your hand,
For on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship must stand the test.
We have had so many happy years,
You wouldnt want me to suffer so.
When the time comes,
Please, let me go.
Take me to where my needs theyll tend,
Only, stay with me until the end.
And hold me firm and speak to me,
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time you will agree,
It is a kindness you do to me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.
Dont grieve that it must be you
Who has to decide this thing to do
Weve been so close we two these years,
Dont let your heart hold any tears.

The one from the emergency vet was nothing special, but the one from my vet was really nice. Before the standard dog sympathy message it read:
We're all so sorry to hear about Dakota. She was such a sweet soul.
And after...
If there's anything we can do for you, please let us know.
I really like this vet. Best one I've ever had for any of my three dogs. They even offered to either refund or credit the 24 lb bag of prescription dog food I had recently bought as it was at least 1/2 full. I took a credit as I'm hoping to be bringing a new puppy to them late July or early August.
I'm sorry for your loss....it's not an easy decision, at all.
I also have a 'Paw Prints on My Heart' marker on the way. Should be here tomorrow.
I worked from home that Friday because I didn't get back from the emergency vet until 2 AM and I was physically tired and emotionally drained.
What's really weird is my home office is upstairs and twice that day I heard a single jingle from downstairs that sounded exactly like the tags on her collar, and then once again on Saturday. I buried her on Sunday and haven't heard it since.
The mind playing tricks? Probably, but still weird.
On April 9th, I had to put one of my cats down. My Gizmo was only 3, and it was, of course horribly emotional. Anyway, that evening and a couple nights since, I've been laying in bed, and felt a cat jump up on the bed. Even if you don't see them, you know how you feel them walking across the bed to you, well each time I figure it's Pooh, Gizmo's brother. When I roll over, nothing is there. Pooh is curled up in my chair. I get scared easily, but that doesn't bother me at all. It comforts me.
Anyway, I am sorry for your loss Just. She was a beauty.
The vet laid her in a cardboard cremation box to take her home. They arranged her very peacefully, wrapped in a soft mesh white blanket. Looked just like she was sleeping.
I put it on my bedroom dresser, top off with a candle on either end. It was very comforting having her there for the two days while I worked to thaw the ground. It was frozen solid as a rock. It really helped to be able to have a prolonged goodbye, even though it was very emotional.
