Pet Bereavement Support Group
The loss of a pet or animal to which one has become emotionally bonded can be an intense loss, comparable with the death of a loved one. Whilst there is strong evidence that animals can feel such loss for other animals, this community focuses on human feelings, when an animal is lost, dies or otherwise is departed.
My heart goes out to you as you begin your journey. This is the right place to be for support. I lost my baby 2 months ago and have received a lot of support from others on this site.
You loved him, I can feel the pain you are going through but please don't beat yourself up.
My thoughts and prayers go out to you during this difficult time.
I hope you're able to find some peace through your journey.
Just realize that the life you shared with your precious Rufus should not be outweighed by the way he died. He would want you to remember the happy times, he would not want you to blame yourself, and he would be thankful that he had such a loving person to see him through his illness and get him medical care. I know it's hard but you will have to forgive yourself because the facts are you didn't starve him, you tried to do everything you could under the advice of your vet. You aren't God you don't have magical powers. You are a human with a heart of gold. Just remember that and again, I'm so sorry for your loss.
Scoutsmom, thank you for your kind reply. I'm so very sorry for your tragic loss, but, for what it's worth, I don't think you should feel responsible, it was a tragic accident no one could have foreseen. You are right, I know they wouldn't want their death to overshadow their life, I'm trying hard to focus on the happy times, but then guilt rears its ugly head again and I remember every single thing that I did wrong. Hugs, sending you thoughts of peace and healing.
Please don't blame yourself, you and the vet tried anything and everything, but sadly just one illiness after another attacked your baby.
Just remember it was out of your hands and you did what you could.
Annette, thank you so much for your kind words. I wish I could convince myself I did try everything, it seemed so at the time, but I'm no longer sure it was the case. Sending you hugs and warm thoughts!
I had to be very careful of her diet, but I know the feeling of when your baby stops eating and you will feed them anything just to get her to eat.
You no doubt did the best that you could at the time. What matters most is that you loved your baby enough to do anything for her.
Take care.
I found that out myself. I started the what if's and maybe if I did this- it can drive you insane and you will be an emotional wreck. You were a great mom- and he knew that.
I found that journaling did help a lot because I was able to express what I felt and thought instead of talking out loud to people over and over. And praying has helped too. I am sending you huge hugs and prayers.
