The loss of a pet or animal to which one has become emotionally bonded can be an intense loss, comparable with the death of a loved one. Whilst there is strong evidence that animals can feel such loss for other animals, this community focuses on human feelings, when an animal is lost, dies or otherwise is departed.
I need some positive energy (prayers) for my Pit Bull Cello, after he jumped up at the living room window and it shattered everywhere. The Fed Ex guy had come ironically with a case of hotel size bar soap I was donating, with other stuff to the womans crisis center. Sometimes no good deed goes unpunished
I didnt notice at first that he was cut, so called the vet, let them know I was coming; its a large practice and a good drive from here. Put a pressure bandage on it and long story short he went in for surgery, awake and doing fine post op, the damage was worse than first diagnosed, not only cutting a tendon controlling his wrist flexion, but also an embedded piece of glass in the joint capsule. That leg will have to be splinted and after two weeks gradually opened, to allow movement and see where he goes from there, for the next two months. They did manage to suture the tendon back together and theres a chance he may need a second round of surgery, if this isnt enough, so he gains better use of his front left foot.
Hell be on two different pain meds, an antibiotic and sedatives at my request, as trying to keep him inactive is a total joke. How do I tell him to stop running? Those conflict with his natural instincts and what I allow. I havent figured out how to keep the squirrels out of the yard either, otherwise Id be quite rich! Theyre running around like roaches this time of year storing nuts/seeds and theres no shortage of those in the neighborhood.
Im confident hell heal well as he gets what I consider the best food out there, along with inexpensive foods like chicken gizzards, livers and catfish nuggets on sale. Eggs cost 10 cents apiece, cant beat that for a wholesome treat, and just partially break open the shell of a hard boiled egg. My Boxer is sensitive to chicken, so thats an occasional thing and most premium brands have chicken/chicken meal in them.

Its adjusting to a new normal for a while and fortunately his pain meds help keep him sedated and hes just plain tired, so gets much needed sleep. His tenacity and determination astound me, as in the past three nights hes managed to independently hobble up a flight of stairs on three legs and working with that plastic collar that constantly runs into door frames or the water spigot outside, but he now manages to free himself easily. I bought two extra thick blankets down for the living room floor, adding to his usual three, when he isnt snoozing on the couch, that he can now get on by himself. Both dogs like using throw pillows to rest their head on. My daughter always laughs at the things I do for them, but these are my kids and main support for the last 2 yr Ive been living alone since the separation/divorce.
Getting his four meds in him every 12 hr was a problem at first, after I first tried raw beef to hide them, except he of course chewed on it and the antibiotics are probably very bitter or alkaline; so instinctively hell avoid eating it, even though he craves raw beef. Most of your plant poisons are alkaloids and bitter in the wild.
I hide his antibiotics in a hard-boiled egg and pain meds in the stinky and strong flavored Salmon & Sweet Potato can food. Force-feeding him is not an option. This a dog that not only flattens tuna cans, but puts holes in them! Those Kong toys of neoprene rubber, similar to car tires are supposed to be indestructible, but no one told him that! I found pig ear strips at a chain hardware store (Menards) to satisfy his need to chew on something.
He has been mistaken a number of times as a Mastiff and when I go shopping, hell sit in the drivers seat and look forward like a person thats around 56 in height, waiting for me to come back out the store doors. It looks rather comical, as theyre well behaved and quiet otherwise, not like other dogs that bark, yap and jump out the window harassing strangers. His size and serious looking demeanor are a force to be reckoned with, but hes also a big sweetie and loves to give doggie kisses to anyone who he really likes and after giving him a treat; except I dont need the fish cologne after dinner, not going to get any dates that way, LOL

He has an appointment this Wednesday (2 wk checkup) where theyre going to slightly extend his leg joint (lower knee) and splint it again. His higher protein diet will help heal him faster and I free feed them normally, let them eat when or what they want, just I do. They dont overeat and remind me when they need some loving nourishment for the body and mind.
