Personality Disorders Support Group
Personality disorders form a class of mental disorders that are characterized by long-lasting rigid patterns of thought and behaviour. Personality disorders are seen by the American Psychiatric Association as an enduring pattern of inner experience and behavior that deviates markedly from the expectations of the culture of the individual who exhibits it.
But, I did wonder if your son is seeing a counselor or anything like that? Hopefully, he's getting some professional help in dealing with the emotions he shared. Or, if you're seeing someone for BPD, you might want to ask their opinion on your concerns.
However, if these are currently not options, it may be worthwhile to check out an organization called the National Alliance on Mental Illness. They have a website and toll free number with articles on topics like these, and maybe even some referrals in your area.
One last suggestion, if you're interested in reading a book on this topic, I've heard good things about When Someone You Love Suffers from Depression or Mental Illness by Cecil Murphey. I think it has some tips that may help you in knowing how to support your son during this time.
So, just some thoughts to consider. And please know I'm praying for you and your son!
I will definitely check out your suggestions and it did help a bit to vent. He is such a sweet kid I just hate to see him suffer.
Also, if you're interested, I do know of a website that's set up to help find good counselors in your area at http://bit.ly/SLpHyb. I'm not sure if it will provide you with any new referrals, but it might just be helpful to know they've been reviewed by someone else. So, just FYI.
Well, hang in there and feel free to vent whenever you need to!
