Personality Disorders Support Group
Personality disorders form a class of mental disorders that are characterized by long-lasting rigid patterns of thought and behaviour. Personality disorders are seen by the American Psychiatric Association as an enduring pattern of inner experience and behavior that deviates markedly from the expectations of the culture of the individual who exhibits it.
It's been 3 years since I've been in a relationship but I recall my last relationship felt like I was "home". The sporadic bantering and comfort in silence between us was peaceful. We loved to debate about silly stuff only to realize we appreciate our differences. Sharing with the other a new song we found was fun.
Holding hands when we rode in the car and when we went into stores. Holding hands when we laid in bed and read. Waking up in each other's arms.
We made each other laugh at the silliest stuff but was able to be very serious when it was necessary.
Arguments were few and far between but when they were, one of us would walk-away to regroup and then come back to "discuss" the issue logically so we could "hear" each other. We never screamed at each other; just held our own view out of stubbornness until we cooled down. The after-argument kiss and hug was always a must.
Movies together. Watching the trailers and would look at each other and say "yes" or "dvd" which meant either go to the movie to see or wait until it comes out on dvd.
His underwear and socks were strewed throughout the house...grrr. His spit cups were everywhere. His computer desk was always messy. Drove me crazy at times but it was just a small part of who he was. When I just couldn't stand it anymore I would clean it myself and added a laundry basket to the bedroom so he would have a place to throw his underwear.
Compromise. Lots of them.
He gave me space. I needed my alone time and he was great about it. I needed my space to paint, listen to music, jog, lift weights, professional growth; he was supportive. I loved that I could be me with him. He too liked his alone moments as well to play his music and write his book and I respected them.
Then I went into psychosis and the remaining two years was never the same. I withdrew from everyone, including myself. But, it was a great three years and I'll hold them in my heart forever.
