My counselor brought up an interesting possibility for me at our session this past week; she introduced me to Borderline Personality Disorder. We looked at the DSM-IV, with lists the criteria that needs to be met for being diagnosed with BPD. You have to meet at lease five of the criteria. We talked about them together, and the decision was unanimous-- it appears that I meet 7 of the 9 points for qualifying. I've been researching BPD, because that's what I do when I am faced with a new possibility or problem. It does sound a lot like me-- having no sense of self, having a very black-and-white mentality in relationships, feeling of emptiness and immediate mood swings, impulsive behavior and actions/thoughts of self-harm due to self-loathing. Fortunately, although BPD is not curable and cannot be treated with meds, DBT therapy has been proven to be incredibly effective at helping patients manage their symptoms. My counselor has put me on the waitlist for the next DBT group. Has anyone had any experience with DBT, and if you have and you also have BPD, what was your experience with it and did anyone feel that it really helped? I'm just trying to get a sense of how this type of therapy may help me. Thanks for the input :-)

I'm in the middle of DBT right now and it is amazing, I can't put it into words of how much it really does help, I'd be lost without it.

MY SON WAS DIAGNOSED IN PRISON WITH BPD....I WAS AMAZED WITH WHAT HE IS LEARNING ABOUT IT, AND HIMSELF, ALSO HE HAS WOKE UP AFTER 3 YEARS, LOOKED INTO HIS CASE AND IS APEALING HIS CASE, THEY HAVE BEEN SOME CHARGES PUT ON HIM WITH NO REASON.
HE ALSO TOLD ME OF A MOVIE THAT IS BPD I WAS AMAZED ….FATAL ATTRACTION 1987

I juzt wanted to say im bpd and mood stabilzer meds, anti depressant and chlorpromazine help me alot. But i aslo have autism so dunno.

BPD..I am not really sure what it entails. I have been told since I was 12 years old, my diagnosis was "sociopath". Another doctor over the years said it was learned behavior not hereditary. My biological mother was mentally ill and suffered schizophrenia and most of her life was hospitalized which is heredity but something I actually escaped. Some other members of my family had other mental health issues so I was kind of doomed from the get go. I always thought my mother was more of a psychopath as she was very , very dangerous. Suicide seems to also run in our family. I have found that therapy is what works the best. Talking things over and following suggestions from doctors. Keeping an open mind. I have found the best suggestions come from the doctor or therapist or learned professional every case is different.

I have BPD. DBT changed my life. The skills learned during the sessions opened my eyes to a new way of thinking and new ways to address obstacles that came up in my life.
Unfortunately, I returned to my Covert Narcissist husband and some of my skills started to slip. I’m still forever changed because of the classes I took though.

My therapist just brought DBT up to me today. It became glaringly clear to me, after all these chaotic years, that I fit the BPD diagnosis perfectly-- been running away from it for so long. Now I almost feel relieved. No other professional has ever suggested DBT as part of a treatment plan until now! I strongly believe in things happening for a reason and its particular timing. DBT is great. If you can afford it. I cannot right now and have been pissed off by several therapists. They weren't THERE for me when I needed them. Many won't even take BPD patients since we can be very difficult to handle. If you find someone willing to help you, expect to see them 2x a week if you want to recover. Good luck everyone

I too have been diagnosed with BPD or emotional instability it's good to know but hard to stomach sometimes. I am due to get DBT also after my EMDR therapy which is helping but more with trauma than BPD. It's nice to be here with people that understand x
