Personality Disorders Support Group
Personality disorders form a class of mental disorders that are characterized by long-lasting rigid patterns of thought and behaviour. Personality disorders are seen by the American Psychiatric Association as an enduring pattern of inner experience and behavior that deviates markedly from the expectations of the culture of the individual who exhibits it.
If there is, you would need to be assessessd by a mental health worker, to see if you have the diagnosis and if you would benefit from the therapy. I think they only let you in therapy if you have BPD very severe cos lots of people want to do the therapy, but there might not be enough places.
MY DBT took place at my local mental health centre so i guess thats where yours would take place too. You really need to ask a doctor or therapist first.
DBT is fantastic, it has helped me so much, so I wish you luck in finding a group. If are accepted go for it, put all your energy into, be committed it is hard work, but the more you put into it the bigger difference you will see in yourself. You will learn life skils, how to cope in crisis and relationship skills. Very helpfull stuff. Good luck, let me know how you get on!
My time with my current therapist comes to an end in May next year and my psychiatrist said that after that she would recomend that I attend the day unit at the hospital.
I dont want to do that because I dont think it will help. I want to do something more constructive.
Thanks for your post. I am going to talk to my therapist about what DBT she knows of in my area.
I am really glad that you got the chance to do it and have benefitted from it - sounds fantastic.
But they don't advertise it much, because there are only a few places in each group but theyrun it each year so you may go a waiting list. I kept on at my therapist to be assessed for it, and luckily got accepted. For me it is a life saver, but it doesn't work for everyone. You have to be ready for it, its intense work and lots of homework. Committment is a must. I hope you do ask your therapst, let me know! Will be fantastic if you get in!
