I have to say I don't agree with that thinking. I think the only way that would work is if the water was very hot, probably scalding for hands. I've heard that if you have soap, the water doesn't need to be hot, which is why some restaurants can get away with having no hot water in restrooms.

I agree soap should stay, but it doesn't take a lot of soap. I work in a hospital with sick people all day. One of the main idea of hand washing and killing germs is FRICTION, rubbing your hands together. That's way they tell you to sing the song "happy birthday", to allow enough time and friction to wash the germs away. Soap is a helper.
Try this, it's a little scary: I was told once by our "infectious control" person at work that a majority of people forget to wash the thumb on their dominant hand. She got this info from some study that was done. Next time you wash your hands, pay special attention to washing that dominant thumb, it will feel wierd when you do it, because it's not used to being scrubed. LOL.

I somewhat agree with your Mother, we as an nation are addicted to soap. Soap, a bar can be used to always wash yourself after BMs. but we tend to wash the oils from our skiin and hair way too much. My aunt from Sweden was flabergasted about this subject. She is a medical doctor and advised me to keep the areas of the body that are not covered clean, but for the other parts try going a day without a shower for better skin and hair. Just make "the sign of the cross", if you get my drift, leaving the bum for last.

I agree that using soap to wash your hands is a must and very important. However I have some ways that you can save money on soap. One way is to buy soap in bulk. Another way is to buy soap that is more concentrated and to dilute it a little bit with clean water to make it last longer. Another way is to use coupons and sale ads together to save on soap. The Sunday paper and stores like Walgreens often work together for specials on soap.

Many times a bottle of liquid soap like Palmolive or Dawn is on sale for about a dollar or 99 cents and then you can use a coupon for it also and end up paying about 50 cents or 40 cents for the soap including tax. if you live in the U.S. Another way to save on soap is to buy it at the dollar store.

You can also use antibacterial soap which has more uses around the house. It can be used to wash your dishes, to clean with and as handsoap in the bathroom to kill germs. Shampoo can be used as handsoap. Dishwashing soap can be used as handsoap or to wash your clothes if you run out of laundry detergent.

There are lots of ways to save money and substitute for soap when you are on a budget. Some times I use a little shampoo in place of bubble bath. It is diluted and it won't harm your skin and it will create lots of long lasting bubbles and suds.

There are some germs killed by the change of PH from the water. They can't stand up to it. But if you have viral bugs in your hand you need more ammo to kill it off.

YES AND NO Americans are obsessed with soaps especially shampoo. Just a plain bar of brown or ivory soap can clean your body as well as all the other high end kinds. Hand wahing is important with soap. No need to add alcohol if you can use just hot water and soap. Stay away from too much soap on the body and hair it depletes essential oils the body needs to keep away harmful germ barriers.

Foam pumps are very worth it! They save on soap!!!

The other option is wear cheap plastic gloves when you do your trash. The cost may end being the same.
