Important Programs Funded, Sequestration Still in Effect
This morning, Congress passed a bill to keep the government funded through September 2013. The bill now goes to the president, who is expected to sign it before March 27, the expiration of the current funding law.
The Parkinson's Action Network (PAN) is pleased that programs important to the Parkinson's community, such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the Department of Defense's (DoD) Parkinson's research program, will continue to be funded. Both the NIH and FDA received slight funding increases, while the DoD Parkinson's research program maintained its current level of funding.
Unfortunately, the bill does nothing to address the devastating across-the-board cuts, known as sequestration, which went into effect on March 1. If Congress does not act, sequestration will continue for the next ten years. PAN will continue to advocate to ensure that these drastic cuts do not become the status quo.
Moving forward, PAN will continue to focus on maintaining funding for these important programs in Fiscal Year (FY) 2014. The Presidents Budget is expected to be released early next month, and Congress has already started their work on FY 2014 funding bills. With regard to the silliness of the current budget squabble, wouldn't it be nice to figure a way to eliminate "they" and "them" from our American vocabulary. Anyone caught uttering it would have to write "we" and "us" 500 times on an old-fashioned chalk board. Just a little paradigm reframing.
