Alex, how very scary that sounds! I have constant pleghm but am able to cough it up so far. In NC I have year round allergies. I also have a lot of congestion in my nose when i wake up.

I have used an inhaler in the past, and found good relief. Will pray for you to find a solution that you feel safe and comfortable with.

Alex, I have a friend on another forum who had the same problem yesterday. She lives in AZ and woke up at 3am choking and couldn't catch her breath. She had aspirated Flem into her lungs and was unable to swallow without choking. This is new to her, and she's getting checked out today. She saw a ENT yesterday and had no visible problems. I'll let you know how she makes out asap.

THIS IS MY STORY FOR THE LAST FEW WEEKS.
FOR A FORTNIGHT I HAVE BEEN IN HOSPITAL WITH PNEUMONIA AND PLUERESSY. AT ONE STAGE, THE DOCTORS SAID THEY WHERE LOOSING ME. I AM AT HOME NOW RECOVERING. THE SPECIALIST CONSULTANT SAYS THIS WHOLE EPISODE STARTED FROM SWALLOWING. BEWARE AND BE AWARE ALEX, AND MY PEERS OF THIS DANGER WITH SWALLOWING .
AS FOR MYSELF IT WILL BE A LONG ROAD BACK TO HEALTH.

Stuart,so glad to hear your good self is on the mend. It is ironic that something as automatic as swallowing could cause so much fear desperation. Leading to hospitalization. i got some good advice from a member of my local parkinsons condition support group She ended up in the hospital with the same problem and they gave her a suction machine to mechanically clear her throat. She said it made a huge difference. I have been shopping on internet but have no clue as to which manufacturer/ product is the right one. Before getting a hospital bed, my mother used a wedge to provide a gentle incline for her head, neck and shoulders. Now, with the hospital bed, she has it set at a slight incline for sleep. Although she's had some swallowing problems here and there over the years, none as scary as yours, Alex. I'm so glad you're okay again.

Alex did you try speech therapy, they can help you with the problem.It may sound strange but it works. Try it , may work for you. Had a same problem , try drink water to dilute the mucus, it help me.

Alex and Stewart, How scary for the both of you!!!!! When hearing about things like these happening it brings me back to reality - I have a deadly, painful and scary disease!!!! I am glad you are both on the mend!!!! Keep in touch with updates please. I know we try to keep up the "We are going to beat this disease" but it is a progressive disease - even though the meds work and make us look like we are not sick - we are sick and I am getting worse and I don't even know it. It is like when I had PD before being diagnosed. I didn't even know I had it. I have to stop being so grumpy and be grateful each day!!!
