April 26, 2014 is the New York city central park walk. It is only a mile and a quarter long. To all my friends here on DS if anyone is going to be in NY and would like to join my team from our local support group Young onset of westchester / Bronx for the walk let me know.
2014 Parkinsons Unity Walk fundraising Campaign
Last years campaign for Team Young Onset Support Group of Westchester/Bronx raised over $21,000.00, almost making it into the top 10 out of more than 100 national teams! We are motivated to top last years total and hope we can count on your support. These days we are constantly bombarded by various groups soliciting donations. Im asking you to choose this cause and here are some reasons why:
First, some background on Parkinsons Disease:
There is no cure for PD. There is no specific test to diagnose PD. No two people who have it suffer in the same way. The medications that are available to treat symptoms work differently on individuals.
The symptoms of PD include tremors, rigidity, loss of mobility and balance. PD symptoms interfere with basic skills such as swallowing, speaking, and lead to depression and cognitive issues.
There are more young people in their 30s 40s and 50s being diagnosed then in the past.
Fortunately there are some medications which help to control some of the symptoms. The gold standard medication is sinemet (generic name: carbalevodopa) which works well for a period of time, but has a history of losing its effect after a while.
What happens to my donation?
100% of the money raised goes to research
The scientists at the Michael J. Fox foundation are accelerating the pace of research and streamlining the process of getting new therapies approved by the FDA.
Why I raise money for Parkinsons Research:
As a person with Parkinsons, I have a personal stake in supporting research.
My hope is that this research will lead to better therapies for controlling symptoms, more definitive diagnostics, and someday soon a CURE.

Last year at the Unity Walk we had 50 people walk with our team. This year we expected many more. We invite you to walk with us its just a mile and a quarter through beautiful Central Park.
This year our campaign has two challenge sponsors: one has offered $5,000.00 and another has offered $2,000.00.
