My husband who has had Parkinson's for 7 years is now facing lung surgery.
He has had a cough since August and long story short they discovered a large mass on his lung.
He has gone through a series of tests and a Bronchoscopy to check the lymph nodes and a Biopsy of the mass.
The results showed the mass to be Adenocarcinomas which is non small cell lung cancer. It isn't as aggressive as small cell lung cancer.
The biopsy of the lymph nodes was negative and it doesn't show cancer in any other part of the body.
He is under the care of a Thoracic Surgeon who has recommended removal of the lower lobe where the mass is contained.
It is called Video Assisted Thoracic Surgery or VATS lobectomy. It is a very common surgery.
We have decided to go ahead with the surgery as it should be removed and the doctor thinks the cough will go away.
I am thinking that maybe some of the fatigue that he experiences could be from this cancer. Who knows?
. We think that just because a person has Parkinson's the fatigue is part of that disease and also could be from meds (?). Maybe not so much in this case, so we'll see..
We have an appointment with the MDS for his annual clinic checkup in a week, so will talk to the specialist about it. He knows he was going through the first tests.
My husband is only 66 years old and the surgeon hopes he can give him a better quality of life and the Pulmonary Function (breathing) test was good for the surgery. .

There have been so many advances in treatments, many patients are winning and living a good life after surgery and treatments. Keep the positive going.

We actually saw the Clinic nurse who was new since the other one retired and since it's a University hospital we saw the MDS's assistant who we met in Dec. when my husband had his Botox for his eye spasms.
I was concerned about what the Anesthesiologist said about having the anesthesia with the complication of having PD. My husband was doing weird things after having a sedative during the Bronchoscopy and the Anesthesiologist said that this time it might affect his memory brain.
I mentioned my concerns to the other doctor and he said there won't be a lasting affect and he had no issues about the anesthesia so I felt much better.
I also said that his memory is gradually getting worse, so he said that we could talk about medication at the next appointment in the summer. He didn't want to do anything now since he is having surgery.
My husband's is having problems sleeping, but I think it's anxiety about the surgery. I am having problems too and finally last night
Anyway as I was saying, I had a better sleep last night.
We'll be okay and our children will be there to support us, so I won't be alone.
I am so sad to hear of your husband's diagnosis, however, you must be relieved to finally know what the problem is and have a plan of action. It just isn't fair he should have to deal with this and PD. Either one by itself is enough to shake your faith a little.
From reading your posts I can tell you are a strong woman and have your faith in God to give you strength through the upcoming events. Please take a few moments each day to take care of yourself.

We'll be within minutes of the hospital so won't have to worry about the weather and if worse comes to worse we can call a taxi.
It will be a long day, especially when he's in the operating room and recovery. I hope he isn't too confused when he wakes up.
We have to believe that things will be okay and hope it isn't too hard on him, but with PD it won't be the easiest.

They didn't have to remove any rib. The doctor thinks the cancer was Stage 1 but we'll have to wait for the report in a month at the follow up.
Our girls stayed with me during the time he was in hospital.
The department where he was in hospital had a quiet time between 2 and 4 p.m. with no visitors so we did some shopping during that time or rested.
The tube in his chest was removed the day after surgery and all tubes removed the following day. We were able to bring him home on Friday. He is in a little pain but only takes Extra Strength Tylenol. He is mostly sleeping in the recliner at night, and today after a shower we are to remove the bandage, which I'm not looking forward to. A nurse doesn't come to help, so it's up to me.
They want it to be to the air to heal, so I hope it goes okay.
I am so glad the worst is over and Tuesday was the longest day of our lives, so I'm glad I had the girls for support.
We also borrowed a raised toilet seat with arms so he can get up better.
There might be someone coming to assess the house, but I think we have most things we need. We have a seat and a bar in the shower, and bars at the entrance and the doors are wide for the walker.
The house was built in case we needed a wheel chair and the bathroom is very roomy and everything on the main floor that he needs.
