Parkinson's disease is a movement disorder often characterized by muscle rigidity, tremor, a slowing of physical movement, and in extreme cases, a loss of physical movement. The primary symptoms of Parkinsons are due to excessive muscle contraction, normally caused by the insufficient formation and action of dopamine, which is produced in the dopaminergic neurons of the...
1) Although the majority of cases of PD appear to be sporadic, there is increasing evidence that genetic factors play a role in the pathogenesis of PD
2)This is particularly true when the age at symptom onset is younger than 50 years
3) A genetic contribution to the etiology of PD is suggested by the observation that approximately 20 to 25 percent of patients with sporadic PD have at least one first-degree relative with PD.
4) Furthermore, a large case-control study found that first-degree relatives of patients with PD were 2.3 times as likely to develop PD.
5) Interestingly in a study on the World War II Veteran Twin Registry they identified 193 twins with PD and concluded that genetic factors were important when the disease began before (BUT NOT AFTER) age 50
6) There are some Familial types of PD associated with identified genetic abnormalities (these are less common) but I imagine as we know more those "sporadic" PD cases may also be associated with a known genetic abnormality...

Hello and I hope you had a rejuvenating vacaation in New Mexico or Mexico...You are really an example of what a medical doctor ought be. It'sis refreshing to hear honest, straight forward answers to other peoples medical questions.
I have a question:
Is 1 tablet of Sinemet CR 25/100 equivalent to 1/2 tab of Sinemet CR 50/200mg?
My name is WJGonza.
You're mother, I suspect, may be the genetic carrier of a defective genetic DNA, since study after study, shows a slightly higher incidence of Parkinson's in female.
May I ask, where did you all grow up? What common factors besides family ties have you with your half sisters and half brothers. Are there many people, in your area, with Parkinson's?
I decided to not do that, i was concerned that my sister might get it also.
I asked about my children, if they would get it, my neuro said no, as it was my parents who possibly gave me a genetic pd.
And i wont pass it on apparantely
