Oh Iam so sorry you are dealing with this, Been there done that ! comes to mind, my hubby has not driven in about 7 years and he still thinks he should be able to!!! The thing that worked for me was I spoke to the Pharmacist, he said with the amount of meds he is on, he could be considered driving while under the influence of medication.Which means our insurance would be cancelled if he was in a accident, so speak to your DR and Pharmacist.
It is a tough one, no one looks forward to the day we lose that independance of driving... But the reaction time is slowed and so is the cognitive thinking, hense his test results.

Hi pdwife my advise is take his keys and hide it do not give it to him Explain ton him , when he endangers family with his drawing , it is time to stop. It is tough to loose the driving you loosing you independence .But there s time to make the changes and this is it. Take stand be in charge , you are the care giver now.

Hi PDwife. I have tried to post 3xs now and I keep getting bumped out of DS. When I read your post, I laughed because I can see myself telling someone that I don't think they should and then taking them to MV to take the test. I am such a people pleaser. LOL But it is also giving support to your Hubby, when he has a lot of things to think about. I would just tell him - sure Hon, I'll take you when you want to go again. That way he won't be able to engage in a battle with you. My Hubby loves to engage and I love to disengage. If he does ever go again from your description he probably won't pass again. I know my mother cannot drive any more but she still wants a driver's license like everyone else. I guess she has had one all these years. They are always asking for them at new doctor's, etc. Good luck!!!

Great subjrct, my mom 83 has CRS (can't remember shit) She has a car and a drivers licsense and says/thinks she drives to the market and other places. In reality she drives once a week to the synagoge. We belive the car knows how to get there and back. However we I secretly put a gps tracking device into her car. I get a cell phone alert if the car moves, with real time gps tracking The company is called go track. To take away the car AARP has a self test "should I still be driving." Print it out and read him the questions one by one. Or find a video on traffic accidents for drunk driving and make him watch it implying that medicated driving is trated as the same thing. Also find ou if there is a local community service that has a flat fee to drive you to and from places you want to go. We have one locally. pride being the primary deterant to taking advantage of it. It is not easy to convince someone to give up driving when they think it is thier independence. Be strong and educate him until he understands the safety of others let alone himself. While seeing a Speech Therapist for the first time this week, I noticed she must share her office with at least one other therapist (different name on certificates, different family photos, etc.).

In the office were numerous pamphlets on Seniors driving, PD patients driving, etc. There was also a driving simulator. Apparently thru the Physical/Speech therapy dept. they work with patients on such issues. I'd ask your husband's neuro to refer him to such a program. They would have the power to let DMV know he can no longer drive if they work with him & find this to be true.

As an aside: I now carry a card I got thru the Parkinson Foundation (www.parkinson.org) that is a Medical Alert. It states "I have PD which could make me move slowly & have difficulty standing or speaking. I AM NOT INTOXICATED, Please call my family or physician for help." Inside you write in your name, physician's name & phone, person to call, etc. It was free from their site. (Just some back up on those "bad PD" days.)

Maybe he just refuses to give in to the PD and give PD one of his last freedoms he has left.

Thanks so much for all the good advice. Just an update, I was gone Friday at my volunteer job and when I came home my daughter told me that my husband went to the DMV himself (he drove) and took the written test again. He still didn't pass (he missed 5 this time instead of 6). The clerk at the DMV already told him that she would have to report his PD to the safety dept. so that means he will have to get doctors involved, take an interview and driving test. I don't understand why he wants to go through all this. Our city does have a program called "Diamond Ride" and he has a card. You just have to plan your trip the day before and it is very reasonable to take a taxi. I told him this but he says that taxi drivers are rude to him!! Excuses, excuses!
