Parkinson's Disease Support Group
Parkinson's disease is a movement disorder often characterized by muscle rigidity, tremor, a slowing of physical movement, and in extreme cases, a loss of physical movement. The primary symptoms of Parkinsons are due to excessive muscle contraction, normally caused by the insufficient formation and action of dopamine, which is produced in the dopaminergic neurons of the...
I am having auditory hallucinations. I keep hearing music. When I am home along it can be unnerving. I see flashed of things, but I don't know what that is.
I wonder if he is just confused because it is a different place and he can't remember where things are at night and the anxiety is brings it on.
I hope we get a chance to go back before the season is over.
He went to the speech therapist yesterday and we are starting some voice exercises.
|Hearing music would be annoying. Could you put on a TV to drowned it out or does it help?
I do not have TV, but maybe if I put on some music that I like, it would drowned out the other.
I have been on Sinemet for several years and have had no hallucination problems but I have had plenty of weird dreams at night.
The night before last he said he saw a dove in the bedroom. He told me the next day.
However last night he went to bed early and I went an hour and half later. Around midnight I heard the frig making a strange noise and went to investigate so I had the light on in the kitchen.
He woke up to see what I was doing and then we went back to bed, but he had to go to the toilet, came back to bed and then got up again to the toilet. He was sitting on the toilet and said that the boards are dirty. I said there isn't any boards, but he said it was unfinished. I got him back to bed but he couldn't sleep and started shaking so I gave him some Tylenol to help him get to sleep as it usually helps (doesn't take on a regular basis).
Anyway, he couldn't sleep and got up and slowly walked to the living room which is just outside the bedroom and looked around the room He said that it the room didn't look right, and kept looking around and around. I said to sit on the recliner and try to go to sleep and I laid down on the couch.
He then said could you bare with me for a minute, so looked around the room at the object and finally said that things looked normal.
He sat in the chair and said he'd be okay now, so I went back to bed. He was okay the rest of the night.
Did I handle it right?
Might talk to his doctor about this change he is going through. They maybe able to adjust some meds to help stop or at least slow down the hallucinations.
We see the MDS next week for his Botox but we don't have time to talk to the doctor as he has one apt after another just for Botox .
I've talked to him briefly several times about other things during this apt so I don't want to push it as we don't have time to really get into it. I also told him in July at the clinic apt. about the hallucinating and he thought it was the medication. Also he has problems with sleeping during the day, but due to his heart condition, they can't give him anything for it.
His family doctor said it the hullucinations get worse, then he can give him something that won't affect the heart but wanted the MDS to be in on it.
I am hoping that he can give him something even if the MDS isn't in on it as we don't see the specialist until Feb.
They give reports back and forth so maybe he can send a recommendation to the MDS so we don't have to wait.
My doctor is cutting down all my meds. I am no longer on the clonapepam, first cut my ER in half and now stopped taking the ER and went back to regular leva at night. Im weaning off of the Neupro patch.. Next will be the Azilect. If I cannot control with the meds that means it is the PD. I found out a lot of good infoon on Hallucinations on the NPF site. I also see black and white material hanging from the ceiling.
I would look into it as soon as possible for your husband Dr. Okum says it is best to get rid of them as soon as possible. Before the hallucinations I used to have bugs fly by me out of the corner of my eye. They say that is hw they start. If it is PD I read an article that the psychosis comes next.
I just keep my eyes closed. i also see figures outside my windows and I'm on the second floor. lol something going on al the time at my house. lol
Just a suggestion! I hope you and his neurologist figure it out.
I have had hallucinations but that was a direct effect of an intolerance to morphine. It's scary when you have hallucinations!
unwanted effect of levodopa, which may easily be
overlooked. It is important to recognize this symptom
as it is potentially reversible. Hallucinations are often
relieved simply by reducing the dose of levodopa;
however this also often decreases the effect of
levodopa on the motor symptoms of Parkinson's
disease. " An alternative method of managing
levodopa-induced hallucinations is to either totally
discontinue the levodopa treatment or to reduce the
dose and introduce L-tryptophan.""'7 However the use
of other dopaminergic drugs, such as bromocriptine,
has not been shown to be useful.14'15 Bromocriptine
ameliorates the on-off phenomenon in some patients,
but psychiatric symptoms may well become worse.'8
The use of dopaminergic blocking agents such as
phenothiazines and butyrophenones may decrease
some of these side effects, but since these agents block
all dopaminergic receptors unselectively, it is probable
that the parkinsonian symptoms will be exacerbated

It is now 20-some years later and I am the one with nasty Dx. So far, I have had only the annoying tremor and the opposite of hallucinations -- the colorful, detailed, story-like dreams that frequently come with PD.
Brains are incredibly complicated circuits that sometimes seem to have minds of their own.
Lynnie, know that we are all with you.
