As part of Parkinson's Awareness Month, 23andMe is releasing the first of three surprising associations we've found between Parkinson's and certain traits.
We found that the disease is associated with certain personality traits including being more agreeable, more neurotic and anxious, and being less extroverted. Based on survey results, researchers also found that those with Parkinson's were less likely to have sky-dived or had liposuction, but more likely to prefer sweet foods over salty ones. The associations are surprising because they appear so unrelated to the disease itself, but they may offer insight into the direction for future research.
These associations may indicate true relationships between say, cholesterol metabolism and the development of Parkinson's, or they may simply reflect some other underlying phenomenon. We don't know yet, but we do know that in the past unexpected associations - such as some Parkinson's patients developing a "sweet tooth," or losing their sense of smell - have helped researchers diagnose and track the progress of the disease, which initially can be difficult. For instance, the loss of smell is associated with the loss of dopamine receptors in the brain, and it is an early indicator of the disease. Testing for loss of smell is one way Parkinson's can be detected sooner, leading to earlier treatment for patients.
23andMe researchers looked at more than 1,000 different traits, conditions and diseases to find these associations with Parkinson's. At the very least, they open up interesting directions for further inquiry.
Later this week we will share the "State of the Science" - a holistic review of where things stand in Parkinson's research. Stay tuned...

I prefer savory foods, like a little bit of a risk, but definitely have an agreeable personality, I don't like aggression or anger. Even though I have been in the past massively exposed to it .

So I guess I mostly kind of sort of fit the profile.
Dang - if I had known this earlier, i would have thrown in the lypo with the other surgery, been more aggressive, and jumped out of an airplane ( but only the one in front of the grocery store - I do have my limits). Maybe then I wouldn't have PD?? lol
Thats crazy... i tick most of those boxes....always have always will!

Sweet tooth!? ...lol... I used to have a mouth full, but now I can take or leave the bad fattening stuff, especially as at the moment I'm in the process of losing weight... I find that when I set my mind to do something, then I stick with it until I achieve it.
I have not flown since my diagnosis of PD, the very thought of flying scares the hell out of me, I just couldn't cope with the stress... flying never bothered me before.
Around 8 or 9 yrs back I had a Phsychotic Episode, my sense of smell went all weird, things didn't smell like they should have & I was seeing & hearing things that didn't exsist. My personal hygeine suffered.... I wouldn't shave or wash. It was like I had moved out & something sinister had moved in and taken control.
I'm a little more introverted & a little less extreverted than I was, and as far as skydiving is concerned, wild horses couldn't get me on the plane...!! lol...
