I have had PD for 11yrs now and no one wants a cure more than I do, but if you take an embryo (a human life) to do it then I'd rather keep the PD, thanks anyway!! I'd rather not live with that on my concience.

This is one item on a list of many facing not only our country but so many others right now. The economy, health care, education, war, energy needs....and the list keeps going. It will be interesting to see what he is able to accomplish in his first 100 days in office, I think this will set the tone for his term.

I hope he looks at stem cell research with the careful eye it requires. While it creates moral questions for some, it could hold the key to a healthy future for so many.

Just a straight out answer that you wanted. From what I heard on the news the other night .Obama, said that he is going to override Bush's "No Stem Cell Research" policy. So now lets hope that the news media got this one right. I will see if I can find more information to back this up.

This needs clarification. The assumption made by many that Bush has outright banned stem cell research is not true. What he has vetoed is federal funding for research using NEW embryonic stem cell lines.

Under Pres. Bush there has always been federal funding for research using existing stem cell lines. And private entities and other countries have been free to research any new stem cell lines they wish. There are just no federal dollars available to them for that purpose.

While the amount of federal money available and the viability of the existing stem cell lines - as well as the controversy surrounding the destruction of embroyos - remains a separate, albeit, complicated and ongoing argument - the bottom line is that Pres. Bush HAS NEVER banned stem cell research.

I am in Dc right now and had a chance encounter yesterday that lead to a 3 hour conversation & dinner with a PD researcher that is here for a conference ..very informative we talked in depth about different studies and meds stem cell research and a lot of stem cells also come form cord blood and yes they are very hopeful that Obama will sign to reverse Bush's stance on stem cell research & I understand that many have a moral issue with this but I for one want a cure not just for me but for everyone and all future generations

Yes, it would be nice if people could be better informed. But we all suffer from info overload and unless something impacts on your immediate day-to-day life you aren't likely to do a lot of research on the subject.

If people are generally 'uneducated' on the matter is it their fault or the fault of a news media that chooses to manipulate the way a subject is reported or made to appear?

Even you, in your opening statement here, were uneducated about Pres. Bush's
policy on stem cell research. So it isn't that people are uneducated or uncaring. If the media tells you something you would hope it would be true. And that is exactly why the media (in America at least) is in free-fall. They are agenda and politically driven in their reporting - making their reporting unrealiable and incomplete.

Once again your right Laurkis! The media are all for sensational news, thats how they get us to watch them.

Hi, having treated several people with PD who have experienced autologous stem cell implants, I can tell you that they DO NOT work - death is the kindest outcome after this treatment. However, stem cells CAN be encouraged to become dopamine cells within our brain by using appropriate methods to change the environment. There is great research showing that it is the signals reaching the cell membrane that tell it what to produce and how to develop. A number of people have become symptosm free (including myself) by changing our endogeonous stem cells into dopamine cells by changing our internal environment. More research is under way, unfortunately without any government or private funding, because nobody is going to make much money out of peole getting well.
