Parkinson's Research Initiative

23andMe is excited to announce that, thanks to your participation, we have identified a genetic factor in a gene called SGK1 that may protect against Parkinson's.
It is known that the LRRK2 gene is a significant risk factor for Parkinson's disease. Of the approximately 1 in 10,000 people who carry a mutation called G2019S in the LRRK2 gene, about half develop Parkinson's disease. But within our database there are many people with this high risk mutation who have not developed the disease. By comparing these people to those with the LRRK2 mutation who did develop Parkinson's, we were able to discover the potentially protective nature of SGK1.
We have partnered with The Scripps Research Institute to study the connection between SGK1 and LRRK2 further. Although the discovery is still early-stage, we hope it leads to a potential new treatment for Parkinson's disease.

On the tail end of this promising finding, we have just reached 6,000 Parkinson's community members, but we still have a lot of work to do.

Were you the person that posted earlier they listed your chance of developing PD as 2%? Mine came back 1.8%. I was glad I had read the earlier post or this would have really thrown me.

Yes l was the person who has a chance of 2% , but recently it has come back with an increased risk for me, interesting
