Parents Whose children have been sexually abused Community Group
This group is for parents whose children have been sexually abused. We welcome both Mothers and Fathers. Here, we can offer support to one another. We can vent, cry and lift each other up. No condemning or criticizing allowed. We are here for support. We LOVE (((HUGS))) !
It took months. I made a lot of phone calls just to get updates and to make sure they did not drop the ball. I think had I not been the squeaky wheel, nothing would have been done.
The detective told us not to tell anyone that they would be officially reporting so the offender wouldn't be tipped off while they did their investigation to see if he had other victims or was grooming anyone at present. hey didn't want him destroying evidence, erasing evidence from his computer, running, or getting a lawyer. Then one of our sons was diagnosed with lymphoma, and we let the detective know so he put everything on hold for 6 months while our son went thru chemo and healed to where he felt much better. Then they officially reported in late fall, and the detective said they would continue investigating, but he wanted to wait until after Jan 1st (2011) when everyone would be back from vacations, a new set of judges and prosecutors would be assigned to sex crimes who he thought were a better match for our circumstances. On Jan 3rd, our son who was abused the longest signed permission to do an overhear where he would call the offender and get him to talk and hopefully admit to everything. Then they role played for a few hours one day and Jan 6th he did the overhear, was very good at getting the offender to talk about everything in detail, and Jan 7th the offender was arrested.
How things progress in a case really depends on so many factors, and it can be so frustrating. Our unnerving part was all before the official reporting, getting all the info and system in place beforehand, but then we were fortunate that the arrest was very quick once our son did the overhear. It took a while and a bunch of other painful things waiting for trial, but even that went fairly quickly; he took a plea deal and was sentenced in late Aug 2011. But any questions I had once he was arraigned I took right to the assistant prosecutor in charge of his case.
My heart goes out to you, hang in there. Try and find activities that can distract you, and/or ask the prosecutor if there's anything you can do to help the case. Try to focus more on the healing for your daughter and you. It's easier said than done, I know. Take good care of yourself.
