Son is mad at the world

After the PSU disclosure my oldest son (16) found out that several of his friends had been sexually abused in completely unrelated incidents. The abuse cases are not new and have been dealt with to the fullest extent possible. As my son takes this all very personal as his youngest brother was abused and everytime he hears of a new case he says he "HATES people!"
He's talked to counselors and does very well on a day to day basis. However, whenever he hears of a new case he gets in a funk. As you all know we're all hearing of new cases in what feels to be a daily basis. Our family has managed to deal with most of the triggers, but unless we live like cavemen I'm not quite sure how to deal with this one.

Your son sounds very compassionate which is awesome, his abuser didn't break his spirit. Let him vent, it is his God given right given what he has been through. Whatever way he wants to vent (in a healthy way of course) is his prerogative. His funk could be his time to reflect, it can be healing so long as it doesn't last too long or interfere with what needs to be done. I would agree with him but on top of it I would say "aren't you glad this secret has come out"? There are productive ways to counter the triggered feelings so as to see something positive in it, even little things help. He may or may not need sounding guidance but it is something you could do to help if you feel you need to. Validating his feelings is a big one and I know you don't disagree with him but let him vent and say all the nasty things he wants to say about the nasty people, at least he has a great parent who loves him. You just being there will help him realize that his general comment can't be true because his angel who helped him through this happens to be part of the group he is talking about.

He sounds like a very caring young man. You must be so proud of him. So sorry he is having all the triggers and pray for his healing. I have also been triggered as a parent by recent media attention but telling myself it's making people more aware of how sick these people are. Hugs.

i have to say, i am very much like your son. I will be getting along okay, and then i will see something on the news, or just be dropping my kids off for their visit. i get upset time and time again, knowing i can not change a situation. I see something on the news, and i get angry, and i say to myself, no wonder, our justice system is so messed up, no wonder. I do get angry, i get angry at all of them and the govt who allows it to continue. My ex took kids to a bounce house wherehouse where he got to sit all day and watch little kids bouncing around on an unmonitored visit between him and my 3 kids, two of which he sexual abused/abuses. It turns my stomach knowing the DA wont prosecute him and this is our future. He/nasty perp can go into childrens gyms and watch them --whats the kid to parent ratio at a bounce house gym....i'd rather lay with hissing cockroaches than envisioning him in there. But thats our reality and heck yay i am angry. I feel for your son, and i feel like him in that aspect.
