Self defense classes?

Has anyone sought out self defense classes for their child after they've been abused? My 6 year old, 5 at the time of the abuse, probably could not have reasonably fought off his abuser due to sheer size difference, however, it's been eating at me that maybe if he just knew a few basic things about physically defending yourself, he would be less likely to ever be a victim of abuse in the future. If so, did you feel comforted or more stressed by the idea of your child NEEDING to learn defense? I don't want him to constantly be worried about getting assaulted again, but I also want him to be in a position where if something ever happened, he would be equipped with some confidence and know-how to at least incapacitate someone briefly in order to get away. Am I crazy? Has anyone had their child do this and had great results, either emotionally and/or physically?

My daughters therapist suggested self defense as more of a comfort to her.But also said to make sure she doesn't feel so indestructible that she puts herself in dangerous situations thinking she is invincible.But personally I think it's a great thing to do!

So many times the "control" is emotional not physical that I don't really think self defense classes would have much affect. Its not a bad idea in general but I doubt that it could have prevented what happened to him.

I did. My son has been in karate for about two years now. I actually found a karate class that has a “armor” program. They teach how to deal with bullying and predator behaviors. It definitely helps with building confidence also.

Now that I'm a single mom living alone with a 5 year old I've definitely contemplated self-defense training for both of us. Not only would it help me feel a little safer I think it could do wonders for self-confidence, for both of us. I also regularly have my kiddo practice specific phrases like "this is my body, nobody touches it but me", etc.

My son and I both did karate for a couple of years. It helped with a sense of mastery over our bodies, and even if an attacker is larger, we both have some moves and are not afraid to inflict pain on someone who means to harm us. For me as a healer this was a huge step, as my natural inclination is to relieve pain, not cause it. We both move with confidence in the world, not cocky or looking for trouble, just aware of surroundings and carry ourselves with self-assurance. I also recommend getting a punching bag and gloves. A wonderful way to work off anger.

Update! He started Jiu Jitsu and absolutely loves it! They teach that fighting should be a last resort, but training helps you get stronger and if you ever found yourself in an unsafe position, you could get yourself out of it. He’s really responding well to it and begs to go every single day! It’s been a great confidence booster and I highly recommend it!
