Parents Whose children have been sexually abused Community Group
This group is for parents whose children have been sexually abused. We welcome both Mothers and Fathers. Here, we can offer support to one another. We can vent, cry and lift each other up. No condemning or criticizing allowed. We are here for support. We LOVE (((HUGS))) !
Is this something you are dealing with? If so, how?
My body was telling me "hey, you need to pay attention to what you are feeling. I am going to keep pushing you until you do"
In your daughters case, perhaps she can not verbalize her thoughts and feelings, or perhaps she can't even remember or comprehend it. But her brain and body are releasing the trauma in the only way it knows how right now.
I'm not a neurologist, but I work in the medical profession.
Many providers shame people who have psychogenic seizures and cast them a faker. While I do believe some people truly do fake for serious psychological reasons otherwise, I also believe that actual psychogenic non faking seizures are not an act of faking rather just like lusks1 described - your body responding when your brain cannot. what characterizes these seizures from true seizures are some traits that are specific to epilepsy that your child is not displaying. You ought to change providers for your child if she is being labelled a faker. It's not uncommon for providers to have this viewpoint. I've discussed psychogenic seizures w top neurologists because psychogenic seizures often occur in the hospital setting. No one can prove its faking and truly it does seem more like a migraine as Lusks1 describes. If stress can make you have a migraine, why can't it present thru your body in other ways. I truly do not fake my migraines or use them for any advantage.
Recently she admitted to me that a lot of the "pain" was acting. She was desperate for attention, probably to fill the alone spots within her. While I'm relieved to know that she wasn't suffering physical pain, knowing that she suffered enough psychic pain to "fake it" for my attention is at least as saddening to me. So it hardly matters if seizures are "real" or not -- the cause may be more devastating and difficult to cure than anything truly physical in nature.
This quote from http://www.epilepsy.com/article/2014/3/truth-about-psychogenic-nonepileptic-seizures pretty much sums up, and is consistent with, my own experience in dealing with my daughter's "psychosomatic" illness:
“Somatoform disorders are very difficult to treat because as soon as you extinguish one symptom another one pops up. These disorders consume a lot of time, money and tend to invoke a tremendous amount of frustration on the part of the healthcare professionals working with this population,” said Susan Kelley, Ph.D., Professor of Behavioral Health at the University of South Florida, Tampa, and psychotherapist in private practice.
Frustration on the part of healthcare professionals, sure. Not to mention anxiety among family members dealing with this suffering.
The sad part is that I almost (Almost, I really don't want it to be true) want this to be true so I can prosecute the MF. None of the other known victims have prosecuted him. But this would be my vengeance, it would not be in the best interest of my children. I truly hope (almost) that this is not the cause of her Psychogenic seizures.
I think I should start to see my therapist again for this anger that has been renewed in me. This stuff just never goes away.
