Parents not moving forward
worried-mom
My granddaughter was sexually abused by the neighbor boy, it started when she was 3 and he was 13. The abuse continued for a year before it was discovered. We are on the year mark now and her parents are not moving forward in any way. I am so confused, they have become reclusive and neglectful of all 4 of their children. I am the enemy in this situation, I think because I called them out about neglecting their children and also tried to tell them when the warning signs were happening. The two families were very close and they have struggled with losing the friendships and the guilt of not knowing what was happening. I just don't know what to do to help them move forward, has anyone else had these feeling of giving up and how did you get past it?

Child neglect to me should be addressed by the proper authorities.

The neglect isn't considered neglect by authorities. It's more like they are tuned out, no emotion, can't keep track of kids schedules and needs, the children are having to be more independent. Are these things normal? The parents are just so depressed, it worries me.

I have told my granddaughter's counselor that I was concerned about these things. She just said "ok".

I cant offer any advice but I think just your support would help, even if they don't notice right now.I was going crazy a couple weeks ago thinking no one was doing anything and then my daughters counselor said "WE are doing something" turned me right around.I think everyone has that moment in their own time. There is really nothing you can do but offer support.I had no signs with my daughter, in fact my husband and I keep sending her in the room that the kids played in, yup we sent her in there so we adults could visit.I practically handed her to him.Are they open to counseling? Maybe you can tell them you need it and get them to do a family session with all of you.Keep trying and offer as much support as you can,and let them no you do not blame them.Hang in there

Thank you Bonnie, I have mentioned counseling multiple times. My prayer is that one day it will take. Is part of this process ignoring your kids and responsibilities because you can't deal? I know they are very depressed.

I don't think it is part of the process at all. If they are that depressed you may have to insist they get help. They are doing those kids no good especially the one who was abused. So according to my calculations the girl is 5 now? I am no professional but 1 year seems to me a long time, I mean, yes people are depressed for years but they are not getting better. Is the girl in counseling? Are you 100 percent sure the other children were not abused? That little girl needs parents and will probably need them more in the future years.Do want you can but it seems like you will have to insist!

The other children were not abused, other neighbor girls were. Yes she is in counseling. This weekend it has come to a head, told parents this is their last chance to get it together.
