Arrest is imminent in our case as I have found out it has been passed over to the Marshalls service to execute the warrant the beginning of this week. In my previous post another mother expressed that she wished she had retained legal representation. I would like to know if any of you have your own lawyer and how do I go about getting one for my daughter. I would like to be represented at the bail hearing even though we currently live out of the country. Thanks

Just to be clear, I don't necessarily wish we had retained a lawyer, but I wish we knew what the defense attorney's actions and legal filings were. If I knew what all was going on with the defense's antics, maybe I could have asked the prosecuting attorney the right questions, or maybe I could have retained or been assigned a legal advocate who could have kept track of and informed us of what the defense was up to so we could have done some things a bit differently.

Do you think I need to get a lawyer? I'm so confused. After your comment I really felt like maybe I should now be seeking our own legal representation. I've asked the detectives but he said he can't give me any advice as to whether we need one or not

I work for a domestic violence support agency, and we have a legal advocacy department. You could try calling the one nearest to where the case will be prosecuted that has legal advocacy services, and explain your situation to them. They can advise you better on how the case will most likely go since they deal with the courts there, and they can answer questions, hopefully give you a legal advocate (or suggest where you can retain one--they are less expensive than a lawyer) who can find out and inform you of the defense's moves. This is just so you are able to make informed decisions along the way without being blindsided by potential surprises, and make sure you can inform the prosecution of any inaccuracies the defense may put forth. If financial considerations aren't an issue, they should be able to refer you to attorneys who would best represent your side. Hope this helps, I'm leaving to go to my parents a few hours away since my mom is my dad's caregiver, and she's having back and hip pain, and they don't have internet and I don't have a smart phone, so I may not be able to be back for a few days....

Just wanted to mention before I unplug my laptop and run out the door (hopefully I'll have time to go to the library to get on again).... Just an example of one thing that happened that we found out about later: The defense attorney kept delaying things since he knew a different judge would be on the bench to do the sentencing who was much more lenient than the one who was there if things moved more quickly. That's the kind of crap they do. I don't know if it would have made a difference, but knowing it at the time could have made a difference in what the prosecutor may have brought up for consideration, possibly not such a light sentence...

At the very least, Google sex abuse cases in your area and research attorneys named in the cases. I found out a lot of information about our attorney that way.
