Parents Whose children have been sexually abused Community Group
This group is for parents whose children have been sexually abused. We welcome both Mothers and Fathers. Here, we can offer support to one another. We can vent, cry and lift each other up. No condemning or criticizing allowed. We are here for support. We LOVE (((HUGS))) !
I am going through something similar but we are in the beginning stages of the court process, My daughter recently spoke out about being sexually assaulted 4 years ago by her stepfather. I am going through waves of regret and guilt as I just recently found out and had no idea of what was going on, anger beyond belief because this POS convinced her not to speak up for all this time. My kids are my world- and I took her words seriously from the start- I backed her up 100% and am super grateful that her words were taken seriously by the prosecutor's office. the POS was just recently arrested last month and faces 5 different counts including aggravated sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child. Can you tell me a little bit of what to expect? I see my daughter overwhelmed with trying to piece a victim's statement together for the court hearing- she has been avoiding it trying to avoid bringing up the emotions again (she's 16). She understands the importance but it's like she is being forced to relive the events all over again at a point where she is trying to focus on properly healing. How did you and your son handle the court process? How long did the entire process take ?
We both immediately started therapy. It took him a couple visits to open up but he loved his therapist. And that makes a huge difference for kids who don’t or won’t talk about it. I explained it like this….. therapy is having an outlet, someone you can talk to about anything and they won’t judge you. They will also teach you coping mechanisms to use in the future because we don’t know if this trauma will come back years later or how it will affect you….. that seemed to help him open up a bit. I do not know details of the abuse and did not ask. The fewer details i knew, the better our case was (in my opinion). Most cases take literal years for a resolution but I was calling and emailing my ADA, paralegal, news channels, newspaper, investigators, any anybody that would listen. I made sure it stayed in everyone’s face. From the date of arrest to sentencing was one year, 2 days!!!
I strongly recommend doing your own research. Research the charges, sentencing for the charges, look at similar cases in your county and see how the jury/judge sentenced. Make yourself familiar with the trial process. Pretrial, Announcement, Jury Trial. You cannot go to announcement until all evidence, statements, etc. have been compiled. This is what takes the longest. We had pretrial every month from August 2021-April 2022. That was rough seeing that MF each time. Again here is where the coping skills helped (kept my feet planted so I wouldn’t take him out in front of God and everybody).
Stay on top of the detectives and DA. Make them keep you updated constantly.
Look into BACA (Bikers Against Child Abuse) for your child. We did and they’re amazing!! They will go with you to court or do whatever is necessary to keep her safe.
