As I begin to write this, I realize I am not sure where to begin. The beginning is hard to extract. I suppose I will start with a background...
I'm a single mom. I have been so for 10 years after leaving an abusive relationship. My children and I live in a multi generational family. We are three women, two daughters and our children. We are a close family. We have our moments, as any do. We get on nerves, we step on toes, but we always try.
My two youngest children are products of a very unhealthy relationship. I endured physical abuse. I got out to save them, more than myself. I knew it would only be a matter of time before he turned his anger and disease (alcoholism) on the kids. I kept us all at a distance and the children have had little to no contact with him.
Four years ago, my daughter began acting out. She was about 8. She was angry and frustrated. She said she needed to be with her dad. I understood. My heart breaks for them. I arranged for visits to occur, and for his mother to supervise. These visits went on for a time. Things were okay.
Sometime between Thanksgiving and Christmas 2013, my daughter disclosed to me that her father choked her in a rage. His mother had gone next door briefly and the children had a squabble in the pool. While correcting my daughter, she said to him "you're not my father". He choked her until she thought she would die. Her words. I know exactly what occured. My worst fear realized. He had choked me too. Until my tongue would no longer stay in my mouth and I blacked out. My fear was immense. It still is.
She did not tell me right away. She was afraid, confused. I can only imagine. I held her tight. I promised I would never allow her to be hurt again. Then, I made the biggest mistake of my life. I did not report. I kept them away, but I didn't pursue legal action.
I felt I had more power to keep him out of our lives than anyone else. He has been out. Completely.
Fast forward to 2 months ago. My daughter is almost 12 now. She's been a normal kid. I keep communication open. I reinforce that she can rely on me, talk to me. She began cutting. I took her to the emergency room for urgent eval and treatment. I told her to let them know ANYTHING she needed to. She disclosed the abuse by father. I think we were both relieved. The case is ongoing. She remained there for three days, she is in therapy and on meds. She is struggling.
Two days ago, she cut again. I cried. She cried. I asked her why. She said she made a cut for every regret. I asked her to please let me in. Please tell me. I love you more than anything. Trust me, let me help you.
She said she was offered pot by her 14 yo cousins friend at the park that day. She said no, but she wanted to. Every tear on her cheek was a dagger to my heart. I told her she did good, very good. She's a smart girl and she made a very smart decision. She told me she tries to solve her own problems. I told her I understood, but sometimes we just can't and that even I need help sometimes. I asked her if there was anything else. She said yes, but she could not say it out loud. I gave her an index card and pen. She wrote-(my cousin) touched my private parts two times. I died a little inside, which brings me here.
We went to her therapist right away. I needed a professional. I don't know what is normal between children regarding curiosity. They are 4 years apart. She says this occured once at 5 and once about 2 years ago. It is impossible for me to gauge the actual timeframe of occurances. I know no details. Only that she says talking about it makes it feel like yesterday and that she wanted him to stop, but didn't say so. Her guilt and shame are unbearable for me. I cannot imagine how she feels. She was also very worried about getting him in trouble. I told her, we are only worried about you right now. Just you.
We have reported, investigators came to interview. The family is in turmoil. My mother and sister are not speaking to me. We live together, it is tense here. The cousin cannot be in home pending further notice. I was advised that there will not be a criminal investigation. I was told there may not be any further interview of my daughter. She did not give detail, said she cant remember.
When I asked if she was ok, after investigator left, she said she was stressed. She said she didnt feel comfortable telling two men (officer, investigator) what happened. I dont know what to do or make of this. I dont even know what really happened other than the above and that she is in distress.
I feel as though we are not believed. I feel the family is rallying around the cousin. If she is not believed, how will she ever work through this? How will we move on if this is swept under the rug?
What constitutes child on child molestation? What if it was fairly innocent, but still leaves significant trauma? I have so many more questions than answers. Im not eating, sleeping. Being strong for my daughter through all of this is taking a toll. There is very little support out there.
I chatted with a crisis counselor online and that was entirely useless. Im not suicidal. I didnt realize those things were specific to suicide. Lord help the person who gets my chat operator. Truly.
I just needed to tell someone this. I'm isolated and hurting. I have a therapist appt for myself but its next week. I am going to see my primary today, maybe he can help. Maybe posting this can help.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.

My head and heart are reeling with thoughts and emotions for you and your daughter right now. I will post once I can think more clearly. Stay tuned. You are in a good place and will hear some helpful words from our friends.
Until then, hold her close and take it one moment at a time.
Advocacy is reaching out to investigators on my daughter's behalf regarding the interview and her reluctance to speak with men. Hopefully, we will have an opportunity to make things right.
They have provided me with a list of therapists who specialize in trauma counseling. They wanted to mail it, but I drove to retrieve it in person. I cannot wait.
I went to see my doctor and he prescribed something to get my nerves in check and help me sleep. I ate a little today. My aunt came over and took the children for frozen yogurt. A small respite from all of this, but much needed.
I am trying to take each moment at a time, literally. I am trying to maintain our normal routine. As I type this, my youngest is reading beside me. I feel like he has become the invisable boy these last days as I find myself spread so thin. I am making sure to let him know he is loved too.
My daughter is quiet today, but upbeat. It is amazing how fragile and resilient children are. I think she senses my relief and that there is a calm this evening. At least I hope. I know it won't last, but we can't run on all cylinders all day every day.
My mother made some ignorant comment to me about how my daughter was "laughing and acting like everything is fine". I told her that if my daughter is trying for a moment to feel happy and normal...THATS NORMAL. Ugh.
What I really realized it that I dont give a d*** what anyone thinks. I believe her. I think she is amazing. I will stand by her and together we will see this through.
Unfortunately, we don't have anywhere else to go :( This is our home and regardless of their unacceptable behavior, I'm not ready to throw my family away. Not that anyone here suggested such a thing. I just understand that this is hard for us all.
As an aside, I have a highly important job interview at 9am tomorrow. Its so scary I want to laugh hysterically, but I cry about 3 times per hour. I really need this, but its coming at the worst possible time.
Thank you for your responses. I am reading your stories too. They are helping me to know I am not alone and that we can survive this.
Xoxoxo
I'm concerned about you and your daughter living in an atmosphere of stress, and occasional hostility; please be careful to not let it derail any healing that is taking place. I think Mobley's idea of having some of your family accompany you to a counseling session to get the therapist's thoughts and advice is a good one. The focus of anyone in your lives should be healing for your daughter, and seeking help for the offender. Not acknowledging the truth is counterproductive and selfish...
If they are not agreeable to going to counseling with you, maybe they would be willing to read some of the info on www.mosac.net , which is a site you may find some support from as well. It helped me alot in the early months of our situation. There's a resources topic with several different lists of supportive material that I'll bump up.
Good luck with your job interview, and take one step and breath at a time. You're an amazing mom, keeping you and your family in my thoughts and prayers...
Sounds like you have the right resources to support you and your daughter. Unfortunately family often and was in my case react in very insensitive and ridiculous ways when they find out and especially if it is a family member. They will be quick to dismiss and overlook and down play what happen for thier own comfort. It has nothing to do with your daughter but their own junk, selfishness and ignorance. Unfortunately mist of us who have had family we've had to let go of because of their lack of support for the victim. This is because as you are experiencing the difficulty emotionally dealing with this and the energy to get healing for your daughter and you simply leaves no extra to put up with other people's stuff (other word comes to mind).
I'm glad you found support here and I had the same experience calling a help line I got off the phone thinking are you aware of the job you were hired to do?....completely nonempathetic or helpful in any way. So sad because like you we think we are reaching out for a lifeline....it's a joke. Sorry you had to go through that also. Best of luck on the interview. One day at a time.
I understand the "swept under the rug" feeling. We are completely unable to pursue prosecution, and it is a sick, sick feeling to know that a monster remains on the loose. I know where he lives. I know where he works. So do the police. But the evidence is long gone.
Your daughter is lucky in one regard -- you know SOMETHING happened, and you know it while your daughter is still relatively young; now she can discuss her self-destructive feelings with you and you will have the context you need to understand her feelings. My daughter had the same impulses, but never disclosed to any of the many therapists we sought for her, so they could get no closer to helping her than I could. I know you will do whatever you can to help your daughter. You have gone to great lengths before. Take care of yourself -- in fact, do the best you can to put your own needs first, because your daughter needs to see how that's done. She needs you to be strong and healthy so she can follow.
Wishing you all the strength you need to move forward, one day at a time.
Through our local advocacy center, my daughter was re interviewed regarding the incident. The woman who conducted the interview was very experienced in interviewing traumatized victims and my daughter was able to provide more detail. I still don't know details. I have never asked for them. I find that I don't want to know and I have a hard time owning up to that. A part of me wants to share that knowing with my daughter and the other part...selfishly finds the prospect unbearable. Does this make sense?
Today, we visited the zoo. My daughter did the zip line course and as I sat under the trees watching her I was struck by how brave she really is in so many ways. Anyone else seeing her wouldn't know the burden she carries and still manages to BE, laugh, smile and find joy. The moment was profound and while I curse that this is our path, I know we will make it through.
However, she has continued to cut herself. I'm terrified that she has found some sense of relief in doing this. I don't understand. I don't know how to react. I wish I could take it all away.
I do have a question for all of you. School. What to tell them, if anything. They have obviously noticed changes in her. She cut herself at school Friday. I have set up a conference with her teachers Monday. I'm afraid to tell them too much. I don't want...I'm not sure what I don't want. I want to protect her privacy. I want to protect her from people who may not understand. What have been your experiences regarding school?
As far as family goes, I don't give a rats butt what they think. I'll wash my hands of anyone I need to. My priority are these children who did nothing wrong.
In the meantime, keeping myself healthy and keeping us all busy. Hope all of you are well.
