Daughter cut again today at her treatment program

Took a broken marker and scratched up her arm.One of the patients alerted the staff and they addressed it. I asked her why and she said she was sad.I don't get it, I know I can't possibly understand but what does someone get from causing pain to themselves? Maybe they feel they are not worth feeling good? This is very overwhelming and I am ready to just,well I dont know what I am ready to do.My heart is breaking for my sweet daughter.She has been doing so well.

Please talk with her doctors about this. You need insight into what precedes this behavior, and a plan to help her reduce it.

I have always self injured when things got so painful that I couldn't express it in any other way than by hurting myself. I started biting myself (hard) when I was young and that coping skill never went away. I bite, hit, scratch or cut. It is definitely a release. I don't do it often. Things have to be very intense for me to go there. I am so sorry she does this. I hope she will learn better coping skills and will work hard to stop this one. Hugs.

My husband used to cut and he said that the process of cutting and the pain that it produced somehow helped him to release stress and relax. He hasn't done it for like 20 years but I can ask him to explain further if you want? So sorry your daughter is going through this. My 3 kids...one is a tornadoes because stuff makes her feel "safe", one is a tornadoes and has outbursts of anger/aggression that are taken out on siblings and one is so OCD that not doing it the way he wants produces anger/aggression! All kids express in their own way...we just have to help them work through their stuff.
