One thing I can tell you as medical professional - I'm pretty sure the only way to diagnose Alzheimer's is by brain biopsy (which requires you to be deceased). That being said the correct thing to say is that a patient is experiencing "Alzheimer's Type Dementia". Because there are certain features of Alzheimer's dementia that one may exhibit - but to know with any type of certainty again requires a brain biopsy.
Could abuser fake memory problems on mental status exam YUP. Is there potential for this Alzheimer's Dx to be bogus yup.
But if in fact abuser experiencing dementia - this could impose many a problem in litigation.
Also there are scores from the mental status exams they perform that range from mild to moderate to severe.
Mild may mean he's still able to live independently even and still has some capacity.
So you definitely need more info.

And to add more doubt to this diagnosis, in the last year his wife has entered a nursing home and has been diagnosed with Parkinson's. Which they explain as Alzheimer's with "the shakes". She he would know how to answer the questions to get that diagnosis. And for years, her ran a nursing home, even helping get an Alzheimer's unit up and running. Maybe I should mention all oft his to out attorney.

Oh, my gosh. Parkinson's is NOT "Alzheimer's with the shakes." A completely different neuropathy!! She may have A and/or P, but one doesn't lead to the other.

I.e., she would have to have pretty late-stage PD in order to develop dementia. People can go a long, long time with PD without any sign of dementia. Think of Muhammed Ali. He's lost a lot of physical strength, but he's still all there. He could probably still cold-cock your FIL, though. I would love to see it.

It is so difficult to separate my husband from his family. I hate his family. And it is hard for me to listen when he talks about them. With his mother, first they say it is Alzheimer's, then it is Parkinson's, then is Parkinson's with Dementia. I can't believe any of it. when I try to explain it to others I sound like an idiot. I use the terms they use.

I just want it to be over. His mom is in a nursing home, his dad is on his way if not already.

I feel like I am going crazy. And I have no way of getting answers. I am blind and I am helpless.
