I am really struggling, thus my hope is to find support thru this group.
We have recently found out that our 12 yr old daughter was sexually victimized by my best friend's son who is 16 yrs old. This started when she was 11 and he was 15. She feels as though she loves(ed) this boy.
My Story:
Over the past year I have struggled with her and online stuff on her IPOD. It was things that I did not approve of such as complaints and creating a pictogram account after being told that was not available. I had grounded her from her ipod and all electronic communication for many months, giving her no access.
Over the past year, her emotions and behavior was all over the place. (now I can see why) And I started to pursue treatment for her due to this. (I have four children, two of which have Aspergers, Anxiety and inattention issues) I remember feeling as though, here we go down that road again.
Her school year ended poorly in some classes and her anxiety was very high and I was very concerned.
At this point, I was working with my best friend. We both worked within the children's mental health field, due to our own personal experiences with our children. We had worked together for six years and supported each other with our children. At times, my daughter would go to her home if I was working and she also was very close to her and her daughter who has downs syndrome. My daughter was wonderful with her and enjoyed being with her.
Over the course of the past year, my daughter started asking to go there to be with my friend on a very frequent basis. Her behavior at home with myself and her brothers was very intense. I did not allow her to got there very often due to this, but there were some times she did go there.
Over this course of time, my daughter started having "crushes" on boys. Pretty typical development for a girl her age and we spoke about her not being able to date until she was older. It became apparent to me that she had a crush on this boy. My friend and I had many conversation about making sure that there was supervision at all times. In writing this, I feel so stupid that I thought this was all covered. That I thought we were on the same page. I think back to our conversations and her telling me that she did not leave them alone and me believing her. This guilt I carry with myself always.
Fast forward to right before summer started. Her behavior in some ways was better and I gave her back her ipod, with guidelines and restrictions. Within a couple of weeks, we had another issue with the ipod, again, all electronics were removed from her at this point. Therapy finally starts. Good therapist and DBT group combination. The therapist has a long waiting list, but gives us a chance due to my friend's relationship with her. My child is not happy with this in the begging, but we start anyway.
Next we have an issue with our second child smoking pot and deal with that. Trying to support him as he is struggling with depression and being a sibling of those with disablitys. All of the kids are worried about him and feel like he has not gotten the support needed.
Trucking along for a few weeks, settling into the routine of summer, work, the older kids have an internship where I worked. My daughter is coming to work with me between her group and also doing volunteer work. I am working hard on my relationship with my daughter and feel like we are making some steps with this.
So one night I come home from grocery shopping and call all of the kids to help bring in the groceries. My daughter is in her room and I go in o get her. She puts an IPOD under the blankets and tells me that is just the ipod nano, that has no internet access and apps. I take it from her and it is my mil's ipod that I forgot that we had. It had been sitting in the kitchen for month's waiting to go back to her.
I grab the IPOD and find that she had downloaded a texting app and another app. She had been sexting with unknown individuals. Her dad sees this as well. We are both devastated! I look at the messages that she had sent an find that she was texting my friends son. No pictures, but the text messages make me very uncomfortable. I question her and ask her outright if she has had sex with this boy. First she denies, then tells me yes, she loves him and they are in a relationship. I tell her she cannot consent to sex, she is to young. I blunder any of my attempts to get information from her as to how many times and when. I tell her that she is not responsible, that he is. What he did was wrong and my friend was wrong to leave them alone. I tell her I love her and refuse to give up. We will get thru this.
I am floored and devastated. I take the week off from work before she revels to me that they have had sex. At my friends house, in the living room when she had been there. I call the on call therapist, who lucky happens to be her's for support on the sexting. Another series of phone calls after the admission of sex with him.
I speak with my friend/boss first tell her about the text messages with her son and also the sexting. (remember, we are best friends and support each other) Then I tell her about the report that they have had sexual contact. He lies to his mother and tells her that it did not happen, I tell her it did. She reports this to his therapist. There is no contact with either of the kids from this point on.
I am devastated, scared and twisted inside at this point. I am scared to tell her dad. My top priority is to make sure that she is safe. At this point, I do not tell her dad. I sit at home and cry most of the week that I take off, talking to my friend every day. Oh so twisted I was gaining support of the parent of the child who abused mine. My friend does tell me that I need to tell my husband, and so twisted I am say this is not something that he can know. I am worried what he will do.
At this point, I have two more weeks of work and then a two week vacation. In my messed up way of thinking, I tell myself when I am on vacation, I will take her to Planned Parenthood to confirm if there was sexual activity. I am struggling with myself. Was this abuse or early sexual activity? Messed up at that point I was.
I keep her with me in sight at all times. When I need to be in work, I keep her in my sight at all times. I am not able to focus or concentrate and still think that I should not tell my husband. I am sparing him the pain, I tell myself. I am worried what he will do if he finds out. I know I need to switch jobs and fast and start to look for a new job.
My vacation comes. My daughter and I start to settle into a routine and start to work on the issue in therapy. I allow my daughter to go to her grandmother's for an overnight with her cousin. She confides in her cousin, who rightly so tells her mom. (my husband's sister)
My sister in law and mother in law have my husband go to my mother in laws house and tell him. He calls me and tells me that our daughter has had sex with my friend's son three times since Christmas. I do not know what else they said to him that day, but my husband did not physically go after they boy.
I take my daughter to Planned parenthood that day to get conformation that there has been sexual activity. They take her into a room by herself and do not allow me in with her. They refuse to tell me anything and tell me to talk to my daughter. I break down crying asking the nurse what am I supposed to do? Where do I go from here? I came to you to protect her confidentiality. They tell me she reports that it was consensual. Seriously, how can an 11/12 yr old consent? I am lost and devastated.
I tell my husband what happened and then call the pediatrician. They tell me that they cannot do an exam, but refer me to Child Protective services, who does sexual assault evaluations.
I speak with them and tell them the whole story. I was honest and did not hold anything back. I let them know what I did not keep her safe and all of the other steps that I took as well. I am brutally honest that I did not revel this to her dad until he was told by other family members. The woman on the phone is very supportive. She lets me know that a report will need to be filed with Child Protective services and asks me if any of the information that I shared with her I do not want in that report. I tell her no. It is all truthful so how can that hurt her? I let my friend know that I have spoken to them and a report will be filed.
My husband and I finally talk about me not telling him right away. I feel so guilty and responsible that his happened to our daughter. I feel like he is going to blame me and hold me responsible. I apologize and tell him where I am at emotionally. He does not heap the blame on me, but moving on I know we will have many things to work out. I hope we are able to do this, but right now the focus is our daughter.
The decision is made that I will leave my job. I make an appointment with the Executive Director of our organization. My husband wants me to tell everyone why I am leaving my job, but I feel like I should be discrete.
I meet with the ED, tell her I am leaving and why. She agrees that the organization will lay me off so that I am able to collect unemployment. She is very supportive.
I call my friend after my meeting with the ED. I tell her that I have told her I am leaving the organization and why. She is shocked. I think she thought that she would be the one to find me a new job and I would stay employed with them until this happened. She does not say it, but I know that she is upset that I have done this. She tells me that she did not know that I was going to speak to her. I tell her that I needed to do this without the benefit of her influence on what I would say to her. At this point, my friend tells me that she will not contact me again unless I reach out to her.
After breaking that thread, I could breath a little bit and get a little bit of clarity. I called my primary care doctor and requested meds to help deal with the anxiety, depression and guilt.
The ED reaches out to me after our meeting and asks me to work at home over the next month to finish a project and transition to unemployment. After some thought, I agree to do that, contact being only with her. Then my father is hospitalized, goes home for a week, then hospitalized, home for a week, then hospitalized, in rehab for a week, and now is on the path of being hospitalized again. (He has congestive heart failure, diabetes and has had a stroke.) So I continue struggling to finish the project and be done with my employment with the organization.
Where an at now? Day by day, second by second. My whole life has changed. I look to support my daughter to the best of my ability and help her heal. I look to support my other children to the best of my ability and help them heal as well. I worry about them and hope we will come thru this as an intact family. All of my children are effected substantially. Because most of my children were connected to the organization that I worked for, my leaving effects them more than just the financial impact on our family. Because my children were connect to my friend, the dissolving of that friendship effects all of them. Because of our close friendship for so many years, we shared doctor and therapist resources. I have communicated with all of them to try and prevent us all being in the same location at the same time. That is tricky though. I wonder about switching the supports that the kids have....But do not want any to regress as they are engaged with the therapists. I worry about my dad and his health, but also the impact of me needed to help him on the kids.
So, that is my story.

So, that is my story.
First, I must refer you to the excellent site, www.mosac.net. It is full of validation for your emotions, as well as practical guidance. Please have a look at the extensive lists of resources on our page as well (among the posts -- I'll bump them up for you). Also, here's an immediate route to calm, from moment to moment: http://www.jimhopper.com/mindfulness/
Second, I want to say that childhood sexual abuse never happens in a vacuum. We all have busy lives and focus on what we can see in front of us -- because, of course, we cannot see what's not in front of us. When we feel as if we have taken every precaution to protect our children, it is a total blindside to realize that this has happened. And anyway, the odds are against it -- this does NOT happen to 75% of girls. It is a huge, traumatic shock to realize our own daughters have become part of the 25% to whom it has happened.
Taking a page from another support group, Alcoholics Anonymous operates on the tenet that "secrets kill." Now that this secret is out, you have a chance to deal with it effectively, and the healing must reach your entire family. I'm so glad you already have therapy in place. You can gain some insight into the matter of changing your caregivers from the caregivers themselves -- can they maintain objectivity if they keep one client vs. the other? But listen to your instincts -- if you sense it's time to change, start searching for alternatives.
Do either or both the boy and your daughter have Aspergers? This can make it more difficult to explain the difference between love and abuse -- which is difficult enough to discern among children without any processing disorders! On the flip side, if your daughter is one of your children with no such disorders, please do not beat yourself up for spending too much time focused on the valuable work you are doing on behalf of your other children. As you know, it feels as if there is no such thing as too much time spent on their behalf. By comparison, our other children may seem to have the coping skills they need because everything seems to happen more easily for them. GUILT IS TOXIC when it is undeserved. Please know that we all arrive here bathed in guilt, but little by little we begin to realize that we don't deserve it, and this will happen for you as well. (By the way, I joined this site when my adult daughter disclosed, earlier this year, that she was abused long ago by neighbors, and I am making progress regarding guilt. It comes and goes, but it stays gone longer these days.)
You're in the early days of this. Hang in there, and keep checking in as needed. Wishing you strength and clarity.
You have such a full plate. Can anyone, trusted family or friends, give you a break on some of your chores, such as cooking, laundry? The first few months after disclosure are very hard on the parents/caregivers. I found it helpful to go into survival mode during that time-just handling the basics of keeping a home running. It is important to keep to as a normal routine as possible to give the kids some stability. Do you have respite available for your kids who are DD? Give yourself some breathing room, sister, this journey is a marathon, not a sprint. Reserve your strength. Can siblings help out with your dad?
You are absolutely doing the right things for your daughter. Please don't let the guilt eat you alive, and it will, if you let it. You CAN move forward from this, all of you.
I shared a PCP with both my parents and I had to switch. My dad was the perp and our doctor just didn't get what my dad did. You may find it helpful to see new therapists so you have the space necessary to not worry about running into the perp or his mom. I get what you are saying about the kids and their therapists, though. Give it some thought. You sound like a very intelligent, caring parent who is capable making good decisions.
Sending you prayers of strength, peace, and blessings.
Thank you for your support. It is appreciated.
"Do either or both the boy and your daughter have Aspergers?"
My daughter does not have Aspergers, but does have a much lower processing speed than her verbal abilities. Add her age into that and at this point, I do not believe that she can see the difference between love and abuse. We are working on it, but right now she feels as though she holds responsibility for her choices.
The perpetrator does have Reactive Attachment as well as some other mental health needs. Part of me understands how this played a role in the situation. But, I believe that the need to control played such a large role in this situation.
After this was reported to our local child welfare agency and the DA, the perpetrators mother had him hospitalized. Part of me was so relived that he was not just out living his life, but the other part of me knows that this was done due to the fear of his arrest.
My husband and I are at odds on pressing charges. We did meet with the local PD a few weeks ago to go over our options. We had decided at this point not to press charges. My daughter is not in a spot right now to go thru the trauma of this as well as she would not be cooperative. Right now she feels as though she is equally responsible for this choice. I hope that she gets to the point to realize that she is not the one that is responsible. I feel that at that point she will be able to make a better choice about charges against this boy.
Last weekend, when one of my sons was practicing for his driving lesson, he drove by their house and the little puke was out in his front yard. This has sent me for a tailspin all week that I am trying to come out of. I find myself so angry. I just went to the local PD to sign that at this point, I did not wish to press charges. And a couple of days after that, he is home. (My husband said he was also going to do sign as as well, but could not bring himself to do this. )
I am so angry at the mother of the perpetrator. I feel like she hospitalized him when she thought the threat of arrest was probable, and took him home when she thought the immediate threat passed. She has stated to me that he is wrong and should face consequences, but he is also her child. The biggest is that she lied to me. She told me all about what she had done for supervision of the kids and she did not do this! Because of this lying to me, she gave him the opportunity to do this multiple times with her. Because I believed and trusted her, I also gave this opportunity.
I know that my husband is struggling with the idea of not pressing charges. After seeing the perpetrator in his yard, I am as well. I have researched our local laws on the statue to limitations for pressing charges and I know that we do not have to make the choice right now. But, what if he does this to another? That I am having such a hard time with.
I am planning on having a conversation with my daughter on what the options are, but I am at a loss. I do not want to tell her that we have decided right now that is the plan if her dad cannot do this. I do not want to create more trauma for her. This really sucks!
"You have such a full plate. Can anyone, trusted family or friends, give you a break on some of your chores, such as cooking, laundry?... I found it helpful to go into survival mode....Can siblings help out with your dad?"
Unfortunately, right now I do not have anyone to help with the household chores other than the kids. It does help that I am about done with work though. I agree with the survival portion though. I am working hard to keep our routine as stable as possible for all of the kids.
I do have one sibling that can help with my dad on a limited basis. Unfortunately, she does work a full time job though. We do split it up the best that we can, but it is difficult.
I agree with both of you on the therapist piece. It is such a tough call. I am not even certain if the perpetrator still has therapy in the same location at this point. I had spoken to my son's therapist a few weeks ago about this and his had stated to me that he understood my concerns, but there was not a way that that would happen. I am going to follow up with both of them on this again before making any firm decisions.
The PCP is something that I am going to look at changing though. The kids do not love him so that will not be a hard switch for any of them.
It is going to get better. I know that it is, but this week is just really tough.
Thank you both again.
It is so hard to work through the anger at the persons who harmed our children and those who support them. I haven't quite gotten there yet. You have every right to be angry at your friend. She did not take care of your child.
It was easy for us to press charges against my dad for many reasons. First and foremost for us was that we could never look our children in the eyes and hold them accountable if we were not willing to do it when another person hurt them. Second, my husband or one of his friends would have killed my dad. Third was the fact that we are 99 percent sure he did this to one of our nieces and would continue to abuse other children.
Our police department conducted only 1 interview with our daughter at ChildHelp using a trained forensic interviewer while the detective videotaped behind a 2-way mirror. She was not retraumatized. The physical forensic exam was too hard for her to complete, however. If you decide to press charges, please understand that you can ask for a forensic interview as well, hopefully at your local ChildHelp.
Your daughter's reaction to the abuse is very common, especially considering both their ages and that he is not related. Her counselor can work with her to come to terms that she was actually sexually abused. The mind f$&@ing portion of this crime is really hard to deal with as it has the potential to cause long-term harm.
Praying for your family.
It's important that your husband come to his own decision about prosecution. Giving up the right to prosecute may be hazardous to his mental health. We will probably never prosecute -- it's up to my adult daughter who says, "No way!" -- and some days the knowledge that that monster walks free and remains a respected member of an academic institution makes me simply insane. Seven months after disclosure, my mind still wanders into some very violent neighborhoods, so to speak. I know this is not healthy -- it pollutes my mind with negativity and wastes valuable brain space -- but it's one way to cope with the helplessness and rage. You could look at your husband's indecision as his ying to your yan -- two opposing parts of a united whole, each serving its purpose to protect your family.
You've probably already said all of this to your daughter, but here are some possible talking points. First, crushes and the desire to have a boyfriend do not mean that someone is ready or willing to have sex with that person. Sometimes even the urge to do physical things doesn't mean it's the right thing to to -- not for the other person's needs but for our own needs! Your daughter's need is to have a carefree youth, not to have to worry about feeling pressured for sex and to worry about birth control, etc. She needs to know that the day will come when she can have sex without worrying about being found out -- that's when she will know she is really old enough, an adult. And if she is "in love" with someone now, that person will wait until she is an adult, BECAUSE he loves her. You can also explain that just because a 16-yr-old boy SEEMS so much more grown up, there's a reason we have laws about the age of consent. Even HE was not, legally, ready to have sex!
Yes, there's just too much on your plate right now. Take off the guilt and turn the anger into action (clean with a fury! mow the hell out of your lawn!). Take care of yourself, first and foremost, so that you can meet the needs of others in your life.
Sending a hug for support.
This site has great ideas for addressing sexuality with kids with disabilities: http://www.friendshipcircle.org/blog/2013/03/18/how-to-talk-about-sex-relationships-with-a-special-needs-child/. I especially liked this one:
"11. Ban ‘good’& ‘bad’
Link the feeling to ‘comfortable’ or ‘uncomfortable’ rather than ‘good’ or ‘bad’. Using ‘good’ or ‘bad’ may make the child feel they are bad if they have an uncomfortable feeling." Also, it allows the child to focus on instinct -- if it feels uncomfortable, then it's questionable, and she needs to ask a question: who am I doing this for?
Here's another site full of great links for your other children:
http://nichcy.org/schools-administrators/sexed (the site is still open, but will no longer be funded, possibly because of the shutdown in DC...fannn-tastic.....)
When you think of it - a crime is a crime and it would be far easier (like in our case) if it wasn't our choice to prosecute and that the police make the decision whether a crime has been committed and press charges accordingly, for the safety of everyone involved including the community.
Thinking of you Wallam95. This is a tough journey. Hugs to you and your family.
I know that day will come, and healing will take time.
I'm not sure who dd is as you referred to in your post. I hate so much that we are shamed in this crime. It shouldn't be that way. I guess most parents (I used to be part of it too!) ignore the statistics and think it will never happen to our children.
Prayers and blessings to you and your family.
