Parents of Prisoners Community Group
A group that tries to share with each other how they deal with being a good supporting parent of a prisoner and the unique problems that arise. What to share or not, how to deal with spouse of prisoner, ex-spouse of, children of prisoner which we may not see either anymore,so forth
My brother, her father, is dead. As a survivor of abuse as a child, he became a drug user around 12 years old, turned onto drugs by my uncle. My parents bailed him out over and over again over the years...drug and alcohol offenses galore. For years, he wreaked havoc on our family, lying and manipulating my parents to bail him out. He died at 47. Her mother died of an overdose about ten years ago. She was a stripper. (I'm not making this up).
My niece spent six years in the Texas Child Protective Services system, graduated high school, and seemed to have a bright future. She claimed to want a different life. Until she started using and dealing.
We started communicating with my niece about a year ago, and things were going well. She learned manipulation from her father, and I've kept my guard up. But we were all supportive. She was supposed to parole out in December, but she didn't communicate with her sponsor, whose situation changed. Now she's demanding that we figure it out for her. We told the parole office her sponsor wouldn't be able to take her, and she got angry and told us that she "just needed to get out and she could couch surf." She wanted us to LIE to the parole office. It tells me she's learned nothing.
I am trying to be supportive. But we've been through this before with her Dad, my brother. I just want to wash my hands of the situation. She has no family. She lost her own child. I feel guilty because she has nobody, but I don't have the energy to take on her problems. I've been manipulated in the past. I feel we need to "outsource" her recovery to professionals, and have recommended a halfway house. Am I a terrible person for wanting to walk away?
